Part of the unwritten expectation that I have felt as Commo-
dore has been to be a presence around the yacht club, attend-
ing events I might not normally attend, and be out on the water
a bit more than I usually am. I was a bit apprehensive about
how well that would go for me as I'm not usually that social, but
it turns out I've really enjoyed it so far. I've had a lot of fun re-
connecting with some people I haven't talked with in a while,
and I'm getting to know a bit about some of the new folk too.
Best times for socializing are, for me, Wednesday night cook-
outs, and spectating sailboat races. Sunday was a great exam-
ple of that. My cousin Jeff had everyone sail an Olympic, and
only half the sailors knew what that was. Cindy Zettlemoyer was
the only signal boat person who knew. There were at least 3
spectators in kayaks, Don Franzene and Marie LeRoy on the
inflatable boat, parents and kids, the McKinnons, and Jeff Ko-
mas with his daughter. I had a blast talking to all of them.
Wednesday night cookouts aren't $3 anymore, but $8 is darn
cheap, and the meals are fun! Each one I've had has had a little
personal touch, and were darn tasty. I've sat with the Jareckis,
the Bernhards, some Porters, and have had a lot of fun. I sat
with Scot and Kari Kent at the pan-
cake breakfast and watched the
Katchas dole out bacon and wipe
down tables.
I guess what I'm realizing is this:
there's so much to do at this club,
and so many different experiences to
be had. So many people to meet or re-meet. I just have to
choose (or choose not to) go out and try it. I'm grateful for the
expectation (self-imposed though it may be!) to get out and do
these things, because I've really enjoyed it.
I hope the second half of the summer goes as well as the
first half has. I particularly enjoyed the Sailing School trivia
night, both for the competition and because it's made all these
dinners a little more affordable for me. (Did you really think I
wasn't going to mention who WON the trivia night???)
See you on the water,

One of the great things
about sailboat racing is its
ability to hook you in with
some early successes. You
may not be consistent, but if if if if
you do a few things right and you do a few things right and you do a few things right and you do a few things right and
get some breaks, you can get some breaks, you can get some breaks, you can get some breaks, you can
succeed in certain races, succeed in certain races, succeed in certain races, succeed in certain races,
and that success keeps you and that success keeps you and that success keeps you and that success keeps you
coming back. coming back. coming back. coming back. In the past
several weeks, I loved
watching Lucas Clayton win
his first Opti RWB race by
patiently sailing the lifted
tack in light breeze, Gabe
DiBiase win his first X boat
race with good speed and
some great tactical moves,
and Jonah Boykin and Callie
Smith place 4th in their first
X boat regatta. Add these to
the more widely publicized
LBYC successes this season,
and you get a palpable
sense of the freshness
around us.

Race Committee Corner Race Committee Corner Race Committee Corner Race Committee Corner Our scorer, Carrie Franzene, is very
busy keeping up with the 89 races
(!) we have scheduled this year. A few ac-
tions by sailors and race committee will
make her job easier:
For opti races, if you recognize a new
sailor on the course, write down the sailor’s
name as well as the number.
Taking a picture of the score sheet is
working great. At the deadline for this edi-
tion, we were missing one score sheet (C
championship 9), but hopefully by the time
you read this, we will have found the picture
that someone took of the results.
Sailors should all have the correct sail
numbers by now, but if you don’t, you need
to tell the signal boat before the race. Re-
member, the SIs limit use of incorrect sail
numbers.
For the Wednesday night series, C and
MC sailors that serve as PRO or chase boat
are entitled to average points. Sailors,
please email Carrie (scorer@lbyc.us) and
your fleet captain to note that you get aver-
age points. Thank you, Carrie!

promise only to finish up the night in last
place! The fireworks on the 3rd were
spectacular. Thanks to all who worked
hard on the fireworks committee. Can-

committee as well. Marie Leroy and Mel

run the outdoor games and did a fantastic
job. The was a great sense of community

ILYA C Invite at NagawickaILYA C Invite at NagawickaILYA C Invite at NagawickaILYA C Invite at Nagawicka by Christine Mc Neil
35 Sailors gathered on Nagawicka
this past weekend to sail the ILYA C In-
vite. Six and a half Beulah boats came Six and a half Beulah boats came Six and a half Beulah boats came Six and a half Beulah boats came
out for the event.out for the event.out for the event.out for the event. Friday brought strong
winds and thirds for many. Two races
were sailed in the morning and one in
the afternoon.
In the morning races, Peter Keck
and Ben Porter won race 1. Andrea
Sullivan tried out her dad’s brand new
Harecut and had a great race finishing
7th. Alex Keck/Patrick Schmidt finished
13th and Glenn McMurray with Andrea
Lee (above) (above) (above) (above) finished 14th. Charlie
Kutsch with Jim Kutch (below) (below) (below) (below) ended
race 1 in 16th after giving the fleet a
huge advantage by leaving his leech
cord on for an upwind leg. Charlie real-
ized his mistake, took away his handi-
cap and won race 2. Peter and Ben had
a crazy comeback after being sailed off
the course at the first windward mark
rounding by an Okauchee boat trying to
take their penalty ending race 2 in third.
Dave Porter sailing with daughters
Christine and Anne finished 8th (which
was good after being over early for race
one with a painful 29th already on the
scorecard). Frank Davenport, sailing
with Jaymie Youngquist and niece, Tere-
sa Westin, finished 9th. Alex Keck and
Patrick Schmidt finished 11th. In for
lunch and back onto the water again, a
third heavy air race was sailed on Fri-
day. Peter and Ben sailed another 3rd
place having them lead the regatta into
day 2. Frank broke a backstay forcing
him to retire from race 3. Dave Porter
lost his mainsheet on a windward mark
rounding that Anne rethreaded at the
leeward mark. Glenn McMurray finished
8th and Charlie Kutch finished 9th.
Day two greeted sailors with a medi-
um forecast (7-12mph) and seemingly
more wind on the water. Frank, being
fully rested from only sailing two races
the day previous and with new crew
Junior, took the bullet in race 4. Peter
and Ben were right behind him in sec-
ond maintaining their lead. The B-17
had Christine at the helm for the day
and finished race 4 in 11th stealing
Morgan Keck as a third. Alex and Pat-
rick had another great race finishing in
13th. Race 5 lightened up a little bit and
Peter and Ben took 9th. Christine and
Dave took 11th. Franky finished 13th
and Andrea Sullivan rounded out the
top 15 finishing 15th. During lunch we
held the ILYA fleet meeting. The Invite
will become a 2 day Saturday Sunday
event, not 3. There were 3 people who
came that would not have attended had
it overlapped X WYA. There was talk
about moving the event back to X WYA
weekend, or overlapping it with the E/
MC invites. For less stress on the ILYA
there is also discussion about the MC’s
moving to X WYA weekend and the C
scows overlapping the E invite. No deci-
sions were made on weekends. A new
run of masts is being extruded and will
all be serial numbers and measured.
After lunch we headed out for Race
6 which almost got to Beulah’s fluky
wind. The wind swirled, died, came back
up and made for one frustrating and
unpredictable race. Frank was the top
Beulah finisher getting 4th. Peter and
Ben took 5th, Andrea Sullivan took 9th,
and Christine took 15th. Nagawicka had
a great pig roast dinner at the club com-
plete with salad bar and homemade
desserts. Peter and Ben were leading
the regatta after day 2 with a few boats
in striking distance.
Race 7 was scheduled for Sunday.
The breeze was more than forecasted
and the fleet went out to sail. The wind
lightened up as we sailed out but it was
still between 4-8 mph. After a postpone-
ment, the RC started the race. Christine
finished the race in 4th, Peter and Ben
finished 11th, Andrea Sullivan sailing
with John Sullivan was 12th, and Glenn
McMurray got 15th.
All seven races in with one throw
out, Peter and Ben got second, (below) (below) (below) (below)
Frank and Jaymie/Junior placed 9th,
Dave/Christine finished 10th, Andrea
Sullivan finished 15th, Charlie Kutsch/
Riley Schmidt finished 16th, Alex Keck/
Patrick Schmidt finished 19th, Glenn
McMurray finished 21st.

As the month of June approached, the 147’ steel hulled
yacht, Scout, got ready to depart West Palm Beach, Florida
for New England waters just like in seasons past. This
spring however, Scout had a new crew member named
Bach. Darby Bach 18, joined her brother Woody 21, for the
summer on this privately owned, 5 stateroom yacht.
For the past two plus years Woody Bach has been working
full time on the Scout which normally winters in the Caribbe-
an including St. Maarten, St Barts and the Bahamas and
summers in New England including Newport, RI, Nantucket
and Cape Cod. Woody’s title is Boson and 2nd Engineer.
Most often either dockside or while underway, he is paired
with an engineering teammate and together they make sure
all systems and equipment is operating and fully up to
speed.
Imagine taking your 5-bedroom house off the grid where
you have to generate your own electricity and make your
own freshwater. Next make it portable, capable of traveling
4,500 nautical miles at 10 knots. The boat has a crew of 12
