FROM THE DESK OF PRESIDENT BOB DONATO
Dear Lodge Brothers and Sisters,
Summer is upon us, and so far the weather has been pretty nice, warm
days and cool nights. Our Lodge will be busy with some fun events, Painting
Class Party, a Picnic at Pugliesi Vineyards, and the Liberata Festival.
Please do what you can to support our main fund raiser for the year, the
GIFT GARD RAFFLE. Mail your gift card donation to our Post Office Box #173
Blue Point NY 11715. Phyllis Auer and Madeline Brewster, and a few other
members, have been spending a lot of their time and energy collecting gift
cards, getting local businesses to donate to the Lodge. So please help.
We recently donated $500. each to the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum, St.
Judes’ Childrens Hospital and the Independence Fund for Vets. We also
donate to Cooleys Anemia, the Gift of Sight and local organizations
throughout the year as well as our Lodge Scholarship. None of this
is possible without your help and generosity.
I am still working on selling some of the yard sale items, listing them on
Craigs list. So far, I sold the chandelier for $30.
I am attending the meetings for the Heritage Festival Committee as well as
the Columbus Day Parade Committee. This years’ Parade Theme is
“COLUMBUS DAY- THE LEGACY CONTINUES”. Plan to attend the Parade.
See you at the July 10th meeting, stop by for some Ice Cream, spend some
time enjoying the company of your co-members.
Happy 4th of July.
President Bob

Amedeo Obici was born in Oderzo, Veneto, Italy to Pietro Ludovico Obici and
Luigia Carolina Sartori JULY 15, 1877. His father died when Amedeo was seven
years old, leaving behind his widow, young Amedeo, another son, Frank and two
daughters. Amedeo was unable to speak English. When he sailed across the
Atlantic Ocean in March 1889, his destination was written on a label tied
through a buttonhole on his coat. Upon arrival in Brooklyn, New York, he rode a
train to Scranton Pennsylvania. Enroute to Scranton, he was misdirected, and
got off in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania. The people in the train station took him to
the fruit store owned by Enrico Musante and Enrico's daughter, Louise (whom
he would later marry in 1916), as they too were Italian and could translate and
assist. He worked at the Musante's fruit store, where they had a peanut roaster
and a fan that blew the fragrance of the roasting peanuts out to the street to
lure customers to buy fruit and peanuts. The time Amedeo spent with the
Musantes inspired him to get his own peanut cart. Later he joined forces with
another Italian Immigrant, Mario Peruzzi, who married Amadeo’s sister Lizzie.
Obici and Peruzzi founded PLANTERS PEANUT COMPANY in 1906. Planters
owned four factories by 1930. Obici invented a new method of skinning and
blanching peanuts so the roasted goobers came out clean. In 1913, they built a
new processing plant in the heart of peanut farming territory in Suffolk, Virginia.
The company, now known as Planters, is owned by KRAFT FOODS, It is the
Suffolk area's 11th largest employer.
Obici died in Suffolk in 1947. The generosity of Louise and Amedeo Obici to
their adopted community and his workers left an strong imprint in Suffolk and
the surrounding community.
The MR PEANUT character has become quite famous. A statue of Mr. Peanut is
prominently displayed in downtown Suffolk. Another was a gift to Suffolk's sister
city, Oderzo, Italy.
Enjoy your july birthday
Godetevi il vostro compleanno di luglio
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third
Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day. He recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious
food that is enjoyed by over 90 percent of the nation's population. In the proclamation, President
Reagan called for all people of the United States to observe these events
with "appropriate ceremonies and activities."

AND APPLE PIE
There is from an article in Readers Digest “As American as Apple Pie?” It talks about the ingredients of an apple pie and where
they originate from.
The British made savory little pies filled with meat called COFFYNS. In America the shells became flakier like German Strudels
and the meat was replaced with fruit.
Apples we use in pie are not native to America, we had crab apples. The Romans crossed them with astringent apples used for
cider. (sidenote: Johnny Appleseed really did sow his seeds across the land.)
In the late 1800’s Russian Immigrants brought a wheat variety which was well suited to our climate.
Lard and butter, from pigs and cattle brought over by CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS on his second journey in 1493.
Sugars and spices, COLUMBUS brought these to the new world too.
Once all the ingredients were here, it wasn’t so easy and it took nearly 500 years for APPLE PIES to catch on in AMERICA.
