Welcome
Well done to the Jubilee Partyorganising committee. What afabulous party in a beautifullydecorated Village Hall! And what afantastic turn out from local people. Itwas an event to remember and one wewere lucky to experience.
We have received pleas for localresidents to reduce speed whendriving up Tyn Llan, on Cae Gwynand through Maeshafn. Children areout and about playing and on thePark in Cae Gwyn, and it is only amatter of time before a child or pet isinjured by a speeding resident.Licence plates and names of offenders
are being noted and reported now -you have been warned!.
Don’t forget to get cracking with yourentries for the Gardening Show on 1st
September.
Have a great Summer.

This is a great, simple, no cook cheesecake that makes the best of the sum-mer's strawberries. It is a little wicked, but so are all the best desserts.
250g digestive biscuits100g melted butter1 vanilla pod600g soft cheese100g icing sugar284ml tub double cream400g strawberries25g icing sugar
To make the baseButter and line a 23cm loose-bottomed tin with baking parchment.Put the biscuits in a plastic food bag and crush to crumbs using a rolling pin.Transfer the crumbs to a bowl and pour over the melted butter.Mix thoroughly until the crumbs are completely coated. Tip them into thetin and press firmly down into the base to create an even layer. Chill in thefridge for 1 hr to set firmly.
To make the fillingPlace the soft cheese, icing sugar and vanilla seeds in a bowl, then beatuntil smooth.Tip in the cream and continue beating until the mixture is completely com-binedSpread the cream mixture onto the biscuit base.Leave to set in the fridge overnight.Take cheesecake out of fridge 30 mins before serving and place on servingplate.Purée half the strawberries in a blender or food processor with 25g icingsugar and 1 tsp water & sieve.Arrange the remaining strawberries over the cake and pour over the puréeto serve.

Gardening Club news
Llanferres Parish Gardening Club
Our meeting held on Monday June 11th had as its guest speaker DavidShiel, Chief Ranger for our area AONB. In his well illustrated talk about thehistory of Moel Findeg, David stressed how important this area is. Boughtin 1999 with Lottery funds and Maeshafn villagers raising money, and nowmanaged by the Countryside Services, this area is precious because itcontains valuable heathland. Half the world's heathland is in the UK andwe have a duty to preserve it. This "patch" supports Common lizard, Adderand Grass snakes and the pond contains Smooth, Palmate and rare Greatcrested newts. Now with ponies to control the spread of shrubs and trees,Moel Findeg seems to be in safe hands.
On July 9th the club is visiting Park Cottage at Penley, Wrexham by kindpermission of Dr S.J. Sime. We intend to leave from Llanferres at 6pm. Thecharge will be £5 to include entrance and refreshments. Non-members arewelcome by telephoning the Secretary.
Our meeting in August will, as usual, be used to arrange the final details ofour Annual Show, which this year will be on Saturday, September 1st. Aswe did last year, we will have a plant stall at the show and donations ofplants etc will be most welcome.

We had a very interesting talk by Wynne Davies of the "WitnessSupport" group based at Mold courts. They are volunteers who supportand look after witnesses who have to attend all sorts of cases at theCrown Court and Magistrates Court. Being a witness at a long murderor abuse case can be very traumatic especially for people with health,
age, travelling, child-care and other difficulties. The group do a great job of help and assistance.
We have no meeting in July as we have theVillage outing instead but we'll be back inSeptember.

Six weeks into my new term of office and Iam beginning feel that I am suffering frominformation overload. All new members are receiving intensivetraining in all aspects of local governmentfrom child care to housing policy andfinance to education to name but a few.
Most of the key committee positions havenow been filled and I am pleased to saythat I will be sitting on the CouncilsCorporate Governance Committee whichbasically acts as an audit function. With myback ground in finance I am lookingforward to my new role.
Denbighshire seems to move very slowlywhen it comes to appointing Councillors tocommittees and outside bodies whichcannot be good for all those involved.
After the election I submitted a long list ofhighway issues that were raised by votersacross the ward. These varied from nospeed limits, to people exceeding existinglimits. From pot holes to resurfacing roadsand this week I will be joining someonefrom highways to visit all the sites on thelist. Sadly highways are one of thosedepartments that seem to have a no can doattitude and so I am looking forward to aninteresting journey.
Many people in our area are concernedabout the speed of traffic through theirvillages and sadly where the roads havebeen resurfaced speeds have increased. One resident recently asked if she couldhave some of the pot holes back just tohelp stop cars speeding in her local narrowlanes.
Often it isother localresidentswho are theguiltyparties andin onevillage theyare now taking the numbers of regularoffenders. Please help us all to keep ourroads safe by killing your speed andhaving respect for the type of roads we areall using.
Once again the grass cutting season ishere and Highways are dealing with ourroad side verges. In some areas the firstcut is restricted to what is called a bio-diversity cut, in other words the verges willbe left until all wild flowers have seeded. They are expected to cut the grass at keyroad junctions and so please let me knowif this is not happening in your area.
I attended Jubilee events in all the mainvillages and although the weather wasunhelpful this did not stop ourcommunities coming together and havinga great time. My congratulations go tothose who arranged what was a verysuccessful party in Llanferres despite theweather.
Regards.

As I write this, I am staring out from mycabin across to where Llanferres/MoelFamau ought to be, but alas I can onlysee sheets of rain.
This season has been a bit of a washout, with matches getting cancelledleft right and centre.
So far we have only played 5 leaguegames, which is half the amount weare due to have played by now.Maeshafn were 2nd in the league lasttime I checked, which is always nice, but there are some very good teams inour league these days and I suspect wemay finish up about 5th or 6th.
As you will see from the following thereis now very little to write about in termsof cricket, so I think this will be the lastcolumn for a while!
Since writing my last column Mr RhunJones has been spotted on numerousoccasions in the parish of Llanferresand HMP Liverpool but, as no-one haspaid the membership fee to join theofficial Rhun Jones Spotting Club, I amafraid I cannot reveal what clothes arecurrently in fashion in the Joneshousehold, nor his various activities.
Dave Williams has retired from thecricket club and joined a hippycommune, where he holds regular talkson how to use hugging to get innerhappiness. He is making a guestappearance on tour with Maeshafn CClater in the season, along withprofessional octogenarian ballroomdancer and lothario Mr Derek Parsons.

representing that it is possible to keepwicket with his head, legs and armsrather than his hands. He still loses histeeth from time to time when batting.
Aled Jones has sprouted a moustacheand taken to throwing quoits ratherthan cricket balls (which is a blessingbecause the majority of the balls hethrew went backwards including oneinfamous 6), Sean Thomas was lastseen collecting conkers somewhere inStratford and Tom Hall is happilymarried with a wife and six kids.
Maeshafn Cricket Club continuesonwards and upwards, but it has nowmoved to foreign climates such asGwernaffield and Buckley. I could tellyou all about Big Kev (nicknamed 'theUdder' because parts of his anatomydangle further than they ought to), MrChumley Warner, a batsman scared ofbathing and Bazza, the suicidal South
African runner, but as you the readerwould not have a clue who I am talkingabout, I suspect it is time to call it a dayon my rantings in the Llanferres Newsand Views.
The club is still here, so if you want toget out of the house for lengthyperiods of time at a weekend anddisappear to a field somewhere inNorth Wales, please get in touch via mynumber on the back of the News andViews.

I was recently admiring Green-winged orchids(Orchis morio) in afield where they proliferate when Iobserved that growing near everyclump of orchids were thediminutive Adderstongue fern(Ophioglossum vulgatum). Ispeculated whether there is asymbiotic relationship between thetwo. All orchids have a relationshipwith the underground stems ofcertain fungi which supply food tothe dust-like orchid seeds andAdderstongue ferns also needground fungi to enable them toflourish. In fact Adderstonguesspend a considerable part of theirlives underground before theybreak through the surface. Bothspecies need a nutrient poor soil andare regarded as indicators of ancientmeadows.I have done considerable researchbut I cannot find any reference to asymbiotic relationship between thetwo plants but I do wonder if theyboth rely on the same fungus. However, I have not been able toverify that either.Green-winged orchids are similarto, and easily confused with, Earlypurple orchids, which are quitecommon in our area, but can bedistinguished from the latter in thatthere are parallel green veins on theside lobes of the Green-winged(hence the name) and the leaves areunspotted, whereas the Earlypurple leaves have dark spots andblotches.Adderstongue fern is a diminutiveplant usually only about 2-4inches(5-10cms) tall, but can inexceptional circumstances reach 12inches(30cms). It resembles a tiny
wild arum (Lords and Ladies)having a single pointed oval leaf anda single green fertile spike fromwhich come the spores. I havenever found it in our area or in theproximity of other orchids but, perhaps, I just have not looked hardenough.Insects have been scarce during therecent unseasonably bad weatherand one wonders what effect it willhave on the breeding success ofthose birds which feed entirely oninsects such as Swallows, Martinsand Swifts. It must also haveconsequences for those birds thatfeed on caterpillars as they are theimmature stage of insects. Swifts, however, have a survival strategy inthat, when the weather is cold orfood scarce, they can go into a sortof torpor so that they use lessenergy. Adult birds can survive inthis state for a couple of days butnestlings can last for even five days. The nestlings rate of growth variesaccording to the food supply andthey may spend anything from 35 to56 days in the nest.Swifts spend all their lives in flight, feeding, mating and sleeping andonly land to actually nest. As theydo not breed until two or threeyears old they, therefore, remain inthe air for that length of time fromleaving the nest. It is often assumedthat Swifts are the fastest flyers ofall birds but the Hobby, a smallfalcon, can out fly a Swift and is itsonly avian predator.
