Literacy For All

Literacy is Learned.
Illiteracy is passed along by
parents who cannot read or
write.
The Benchmark: 4th Grade
● ⅔ of students who cannot read proficiently
by the end of 4th grade will end up in jail
or welfare.
Adults
● 32 Million adults in the U.S. can’t read =
14% of the population.
● 19% of high school graduates can’t read.
Drop Outs
● Children who can’t read proficiently
by the 4th grade are 4 times liker to
drop out of school.
● 90% of high school drop outs are on
welfare.
Crime
● 85% of all juveniles who interact
with the juvenile court system are
illiterate.
● More than 60 percent of inmates are
illiterate
Health Care
Low literacy costs $73 Million per year in
terms of direct healthcare costs.
Some Benefits of Literacy:
● Economic Security
● Access to Health Care
● Actively participate in civic life
● Statistically less of a chance for jail/juvie
● Teaching future generations
