Ahmed™ (Ahmed Ali, 1990, 1996, 2005)
Ahmed is a modern Arabic headline face, firstproduced by Linotype-Hell Ltd. in the early1980s.
Originally developed as a simplified face, itsdesign recalls the inscriptional and decorative tilework lettering of the medieval period. The strongtreatment of the tails of certain charactersdeparts from the more traditional style oftapering these finials, introducing a modern feelto the design.
The contrasting proportions of the tall verticalstrokes and the rather elongated counters lend amonumental look to Ahmed, allowing its effectiveuse in titling. During the later 1980s Ahmed wasdeveloped into a traditional typeface, with theintroduction of medial forms to improve characterspacing and balance. Recently, Ahmed has beenconverted into the OpenType font format, ensuring its continued popularity as a headingface for newspaper typesetting.
The Ahmed typeface contains two weights,Ahmed and Ahmed Outline. Both of theOpenType fonts include Latin glyphs fromClearface Gothic™ Roman inside the font files, allowing a single font to set text in both mostWestern European and Arabic languages
The two Ahmed OpenType fonts include the BasicLatin character set (Western CP 1252 Latin1/ANSI and Macintosh US Roman) and the Arabiccharacter set (CP 1256), which supports Arabic,Persian, and Urdu. They include tabular andproportional Arabic, Persian, and Urdu numerals,as well as a set of tabular European (Latin)numerals.
Ahmed is a trademark of Esselte Letraset Limited.

Al Harf Al Jadid (Ismet Chanbour, 1985)
Al Harf Al Jadid is a traditional-style Arabic displaytypeface. Al Harf Al Jadid Two is an outline versionof Al Harf Al Jadid One. Although their design isultra bold, its forms remain a readable Naskh, inresponse to the needs of secular lettering foremphatic headlines and signs. Al Harf Al Jadid Oneand Two are characterized by a distinctive, strongbaseline-stroke, reminiscent of a similar hand-rendered technique traditionally used in Arabiccalligraphy to achieve a bold appearance.
Initially developed as digital fonts by Linotype-HellLtd. in the mid-1980s, Al Harf Al Jadid One and Twohave remained amongst the most popular headingfaces used in Arabic magazine and newspaperpublication. In 2005 these typefaces becameavailable in the OpenType format.
Both of the OpenType fonts include Latin glyphs fromSyntax™ Ultra Black inside the font files, allowing asingle font to set text in both most WesternEuropean and Arabic languages
The two Kufi OpenType fonts incorporate the BasicLatin character set (Western CP 1252 Latin 1/ANSIand Macintosh US Roman) and the Arabic characterset (CP 1256), which supports Arabic, Persian, andUrdu. They include tabular and proportional Arabic,Persian, and Urdu numerals, as well as a set oftabular European (Latin) numerals.

Hassan™ (Hassan Sobhi Mourad, 1996, 2005)
Hassan is a traditional-style Arabic text face designedby Mr. Hassan Sobhi Mourad, an experiencedcalligrapher and teacher of the art. First produced bythe Linotype Design Studio (U.K.) as a PostScriptfont in 1993, the family is now available in OpenTypeformat.
An individual Naskh style, Hassan cleverly combineselegant proportions echoing an inscriptional Thuluthin its tall vertical stems and deeply rounded final jimand ain. The effect of verticality is enhanced by thetense, reined-in kerning strokes of ra and waw, thewell-poised lam-alif, and the compactly drawnligatures.
The broad-band strokes of Hassan Bold smooth someof the angularity and relax the tension apparent inthe Light. The traditional-style ligatures are renderedwith an easy flow.
Because of the economical character count, HassanLight and Bold text may be headed by the compacttitling styles in the range (Hisham, Mariam) as wellas designs like Ahmed or Kufi which answer to theinscriptional qualities of Hassan. In addition to otheruses, Hassan would be particularly suited todocument text-setting
Hassan’s two OpenType weights include Latin glyphsfrom Janson Text™ Roman, and Janson Text™ Bold, respectively, inside the font files, allowing a singlefont to set text in both most Western European andArabic languages. The OpenType glyph rangesincorporate Basic Latin (Western CP 1252 Latin1/ANSI and Macintosh US Roman) and the Arabiccharacter set (CP 1256), which supports Arabic,Persian, and Urdu. The fonts include tabular andproportional Arabic, Persian, and Urdu numerals, aswell as a set of tabular European (Latin) numerals.
Hassan is a trademark of HeidelbergerDruckmaschinen AG, which may be registered incertain jurisdictions, exclusively licensed throughLinotype Library GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary ofHeidelberger Druckmaschinen AG.

Karim™ (Tim Holloway, 1994)
Karim is a traditional-style Arabic text face, designedin response to a demand for a traditional text faceadapted to setting Quranic commentaries.
Within the constraints of the standard character setand typesetting program, Karim’s design aims torecall the style and fluency of manuscript Naskhwithout, however, reproducing the idiosyncrasies ofany particular calligrapher. The line weight chosen isheavier than usual for a traditional light face inorder to benefit the reproduction of small size Tafsirtext. A tall kaf, deep descenders and slightly inclinedalifs and lams all help to suggest the cursiveness ofmanuscript. The type-style that emerges ischaracterized by restraint and clarity: qualities suitedto Karim´s original purpose, and ones thatrecommend it for wider use
Karim ships in the OpenType format, and includesLatin glyphs from Janson Text™ Roman, allowing thesingle font to set text in both most WesternEuropean and Arabic languages. Karim’s code pagesincorporate Basic Latin (Western CP 1252 Latin1/ANSI and Macintosh US Roman) and the Arabiccharacter set (CP 1256), which supports Arabic,Persian, and Urdu. The font includes tabular andproportional Arabic, Persian, and Urdu numerals, aswell as a set of tabular European (Latin) numerals.

Lotus™ (Linotype Design Studio, 1978)
Lotus is a traditional-style Arabic text facederived from foundry types cut earlier inthe 20th Century, based on the calligraphicmodels in the Ottoman Naskh style (thetraditional style of Arabic script for use inprinting). Its graceful finials and elegantlogotypes contribute to the classic look ofthe face making it particularly suitable forserious book and journal work.
The conversion of the PostScript versions ofthese fonts to OpenType format has takenfull advantage of the latest digitaltechnology, allowing accurate positioning ofdiacriticals and kerning refinements. TheLotus typeface is available in two weights:Lotus Light and Lotus Bold. These twofonts incorporate the Arabic codepage (CP1256), and support Arabic and Persian. They also include both tabular Arabic andPersian numerals.

Arabic Fonts in theLinotype Library
Maged™ (1991, 2005 )
Maged, a traditional-style Arabic text face, enjoyedwidespread popularity as a dry-transfer typeface priorto being licensed by Letera Arabica to Linotype-Hellfor font production. In consultation with the LinotypeDesign Studio (U.K.), the artwork was redrawn byAdrian Williams to render the typeface into acomplete, unitized Arabic font with a full complementof traditional-style ligatures suitable for digitization.Maged, which has two weights, first appeared as a202 font in 1987 before its eventual conversion toOpenType in 2005.
Thus Linotype’s Maged font can be described as atrend-setting modern Naskh design that retains asense of the fluidity of Naskh calligraphy: the letters, when composed, appear as freshly-written textcharacterized by rich, inky horizontals, tapering swashstrokes and contrasting delicate ascenders. The Boldexploits these features of the Regular without excess, tempered by the need for clarity at smaller sizes.
Maged Regular and Bold are eminently suited to textand titling in broader column work (brochures, magazines, advertising, coffee-table books etc.,) andare thus able to extend the range of the LinotypeArabic library in areas of work where the morecompact text and titling fonts would create a tooconcentrated effect
Both of the Maged fonts ship in the OpenType format, and include Latin glyphs (from Palatino™ Medium andPalatino™ Black)inside the font files, allowing a single font to set textin both most Western European and Arabic languages.Maged’s OpenType code pages incorporate the BasicLatin character set (Western CP 1252 Latin 1/ANSIand Macintosh US Roman) and the Arabic characterset (CP 1256), which supports Arabic, Persian, andUrdu. They include tabular and proportional Arabic,Persian, and Urdu numerals, as well as a set oftabular European (Latin) numerals.
Maged is a trademark of HeidelbergerDruckmaschinen AG, which may be registered incertain jurisdictions, exclusively licensed throughLinotype Library GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary ofHeidelberger Druckmaschinen AG.

Mofid Mahdi™ (Moufid Ali Mehdi, 1976 )
Mofid Mahdi is a distinctive, bold Arabic display face, suitable for heading and titling work in Arabicnewspaper and magazine composition. In thistypeface the rounded internal counters and dotscontrast with the angular and more robust outlines ofthe letterforms to give a decorative, harlequin-likeappearance.
The design was originally developed for use in dry-transfer format, and was first produced as a digitalfont by Linotype-Hell Ltd. in the early 1980s. Initiallya simplified face, with its inherent limited range ofletterforms, Mofid Mahdi was enhanced during thelate 1980s by the introduction of medial letterformsto improve character spacing and balance. The recentadvent of OpenType has led to the release of MofidMahdi.
This OpenType font includes Latin glyphs fromMemphis™ Extra Bold, allowing users to set text inboth most Western European and Arabic languageswithout switching between fonts. Mofid Mahdiincorporates the Basic Latin character set (WesternCP 1252 Latin 1/ANSI and Macintosh US Roman) andthe Arabic character set (CP 1256), which supportsArabic, Persian, and Urdu. The font also includestabular and proportional Arabic, Persian, and Urdunumerals, as well as a set of tabular European (Latin)numerals.
Mofid Mahdi is a trademark of HeidelbergerDruckmaschinen AG, which may be registered incertain jurisdictions, exclusively licensed throughLinotype Library GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary ofHeidelberger Druckmaschinen AG.

Nazanin™ (Mr. Haghighi, 1991, 1996, 2005 )
Nazanin, originally named Haghighi, is a modernArabic text face first produced by Linotype in 1978.Its popular design was converted into OpenTypeformat in 2005, taking full advantage of digitaltechnology to allow accurate positioning of diacriticalsand kerning refinements.
The counters and inter-character proportions ofNazanin are characteristic of Persian display letteringand typography. This is particularly true of Nazaninbold, which gives a strong image when used fordisplay purposes. Nazanin possesses fuller, deepercharacters than is normally exhibited in Arabictypography: its angled counters contributing to fluid,well-balanced, yet vibrant, letterforms. Originallydesigned for Farsi typesetting, Nazanin has nowbecome popular for Arabic typesetting as well.
Nazanin is available in two OpenType weights:Nazanin Light and Nazanin Bold. Both of the fontsinclude Latin glyphs (from Palatino™ Roman andPalatino™ Bold, respectively) inside the font files, allowing a single font to set text in both mostWestern European and Arabic languages.
Nazanin incorporate the Basic Latin character set(Western CP 1252 Latin 1/ANSI and Macintosh USRoman) and the Arabic character set (CP 1256),which supports Arabic, Persian, and Urdu. Theyinclude tabular and proportional Arabic, Persian, andUrdu numerals, as well as a set of tabular European(Latin) numerals.

Arabic Fonts in the LinotypeLibrary
Yakout™ (Linotype Design Studio, 1956)
Yakout is an Arabic text face that was developed byLinotype & Machinery in 1956 for hot-metal typesetting.Similar to the typewriter fonts created during thisperiod, it utilises a limited range of letterforms torepresent a full Arabic characer set, thus forming astyle of type design known as Simplified Arabic. Theskilful reshaping of letterforms demanded by theconstraints of the original restrictive technology hasgiven Yakout a very dynamic effect, and has helped toproduce a design whose overall pattern worksparticularly well in newspaper setting.
Digital technology has enhanced the original design bypermitting the introduction of wide characters and someadditional letterforms, and by improving the joining ofthe strong, slightly curved baseline.
Yakout is available in two OpenType weights: YakoutLight and Yakout Bold. Both of the fonts include Latinglyphs (from Times™ Europa Roman and Times™Europa Bold, respectively) inside the font files, allowinga single font to set text in both most Western Europeanand Arabic languages.
Yakout incorporate the Basic Latin character set(Western CP 1252 Latin 1/ANSI and Macintosh USRoman) and support all languages that use the Arabicscript. They include tabular and proportional Arabic,Persian, and Urdu numerals and a set of tabularEuropean (Latin) numerals.
Yakout is a trademark of Heidelberger DruckmaschinenAG, which may be registered in certain jurisdictions, exclusively licensed through Linotype Library GmbH, awholly owned subsidiary of HeidelbergerDruckmaschinen AG.
