What is it?

line• Any mark made by an artists tool-

pencil, brush, stick, etc.• It is often defined as a moving dot• lines can be expressive or

representational

Expressive lines . . .

Are lines that: Express the artist’s emotions or

feelings OR Try to make the viewer experience a

certain emotion or feeling

Vertical lines• Are static,

restful, inactive and still

• Expresses stability, dignity, poise and formality

• Creates calm and relaxed feelings

Horizontal lines• Are also

static• Expresses

peace, rest, quiet, and stability

• Creates comfortable and relaxed feelings

Diagonal and zig-zag lines

• Are active• Expresses action,

movement, instability, tension, and excitement

• Creates uncomfortable, exciting and tense feelings

Curved lines• Are also active• Express some

activity. • The less active

the curve, the calmer the feeling

Contour line

• An outline of an object, mass or figure.• Drawn slowly

and carefully

gesture line• A fluid and

flowing line that indicates action or form

• Drawn quickly

value lines• Value Lines -

Used to shade areas. Drawn close together.

Implied line

• A line consisting of dots, dashes and lines to create the impression of a complete line

• In nature there is no such thing as a line, an edge produces an implied line
