Ligh+ng  is  a  key  part  of  filmmaking,  it  has  the  power  to  draw  the  audiences’  a>en+on  to  a  single  focal  point  or  subtly  alter  the  mood  of  a  scene.

•  The  brightness  of  the  light  is  oBen  connected  to  the  underlying  emo+on  of  the  scene.    

•  High-­‐key  ligh+ng  means  an  overall  brighter  picture,  while  low-­‐key  ligh+ng  means  an  overall  darker  picture.

•  Generally,  high-­‐key  ligh+ng  is  favored  for  upbeat  scenes,    

•  and  low-­‐key  ligh+ng  is  the  choice  for  slow  or  drama+c  ac+on.  

•  Through  the  use  of  gels  a  scene  can  also  be  +nted  a  certain  colour  to  convey  emo+on,  loca+on,  and  +me.

Emo+onally,  cool  colours  are  associated  with  loss,  strife,  sorrow  and  coldness.    

While  warm  colours  are  associated  with  romance,  joy  and  happiness.

The  +me  of  day  can  also  be  symbolized  by  different  hues:  yellow  for  sunrise,  red  for  sunset,  and  blue  for  night.    

•  Time  periods  can  also  be  conveyed  through  the  use  of  hues.  For  example,  an  amber  +nt  can  be  used  to  mimic  the  look  of  an  memory.
