Key skill = number

Lesson Aims

International development is sometimes called human development. It is very closely linked to economic development. Simply put:◦It is the way in which the quality of life in a country changes over time. People should get richer, live longer & have more opportunities.

Development

Development is measured using the HDI (Human Development Index). The HDI is worked out by putting together 3 important pieces of information:

◦Life expectancy◦Literacy◦Real GDP (Gross Domestic Product – is how much money is earned) – real GDP looks at that compared to how much it would buy – against a typical basket of food.

HDI 2009

What is development? What is the HDI and how is it worked out? Compare the levels of development shown by the HDI map for Africa and Europe.

Activity

How else might development be measured?

Draw a scattergraph of this data putting IMR on the vertical axis and GDP on the horizontal axis.

  Describe the

type of correlation shown.
