tutti frutti productions and York Theatre Royal - Rapunzel Resource Sheet – Key Stage 1 activity
Learning Resources
tutti frutti celebrates its 21st birthday by commissioning leading children's playwright
Mike Kenny to write a fabulous new playful production of Rapunzel; a story about a
girl who is taken away from what she knows and protected from all the things that
she loves.
Placed high-up in a tower above the world and faced with the challenge of growing-up, she is found alone, dreaming….
The sun goes up The moon goes down The world keeps turning Round and round.
The moon comes up The sun goes down Can things that are lost Ever be found?
1 year, 2 years, the girl gets older The summers hot, the winters colder
3 years, 4 years, her tower stands straight The girl is dreaming, and still she waits…..
5 years, 6 years, the years go by She's still alone, she wonders why?……
Rapunzel is a delightful new production for children about the curiosity and joys of growing up, risk taking and discovering who you are.

Create a poem
Write an acrostic poem about the story of Rapunzel using the template provided.
Think about the story and what happened in the play as Rapunzel grew up, what
she thought, who she met, where she went, how she felt, where she lived.
How many words can the children think of that begin with Z?
Use the table below to find words beginning with Z to include in the poem.
Zoom Zonk Zone Zing Zigs Zest
Zaps Zany Zags Zero Zzz Zip

Create a bookmark
Ask the children to design a bookmark based on things they can remember from
the story using the cut-out template below.
One side could include a visual design with a word at the top that relates to the image. On
the other side they could create an acrostic poem based on their descriptive word on the
front. Glue the two sides of the bookmark together when finished. To finish the bookmark
off get the children to plait some thread, make a hole with a hole punch at the top of the
bookmark and thread the plait through to make a tassel.

What did you do today?
Ask the children to draw a picture diary about what they imagine one of the
characters from the story would do during the day. Ask them to think about:
where the character might go, who they might see, what they might eat, what
their home is like, what the people they live with are like, their neighbours, their clothes, the
weather etc.
Use the diary templates provided below.
Ask the children to draw a picture for each part of the day and describe what is happening.

Wish you were here!
Using the postcard template on the following page ask the children to create a
picture of a place that Rapunzel would like to visit. Draw or make a collage using
pictures from a magazine. At the top of the picture write a caption to describe
what is happening.
On the back of the postcard describe this location to Rapunzel. Ask the children to think
about smells, colours, seasons, people, animals, clothing. Is the place real or imaginary
location, or a place from their favorite book? What would they do together with Rapunzel in
this place?

Fantastic journey
Using a large piece of wrapping/brown paper draw a path that can be used as a
basis for the children to create a journey, see the example below. Cut the
paper into sections so that each group of 5/6 children have a piece of the path.
Ask the children to create a journey that they would take Rapunzel on to show her the world.
Ask them where they think she would like to go. Their house? Another country? Space? The
seaside? Jungle? Moon? etc.
Once all of the journeys are complete join them together and make a wall display. Ask each
child to describe their part of the journey and what they would like Rapunzel to see and what
they would do together when they were there.
Example of how a section of a journey might appear.

3 questions
Using the resources at the end of this learning resource and the images and videos on the
tutti frutti website (www.tutt-frutti.org.uk) talk with the children about the characters in the
story.
Ask them to list 3 questions that they would ask if they could meet a character from the play.
As a class, each person shares one of the questions they would ask and tells the group why
they would ask the character the question.
Email the questions to the character (Rapunzel, Rafi, Nan) at hello@tutti-frutti.org.uk and we
will ask the actors to answer them and put them on our website.
What’s in Rapunzel’s box?
Working in groups of 5/6 ask each child to write/draw on a post it note a special object that
they think Rapunzel would keep in her box. In turn, each child puts a post it note in a
container in the middle of table. Children can also mime the object and put it in an imaginary
box and ask the group to guess what it is. Each child in turn has to remember the objects
already in the box and the object they have added. They say these out loud to the group.
Rapunzel had a yoyo in her box
Rapunzel has a yoyo and a pencil in her box
Rapunzel had a yoyo, a pencil and a magnifying glass in her box
A present for Rapunzel When the children have finished the game ask them to draw a picture of the object that they
would most like to give to Rapunzel to keep in her box.
Ask the children to write 3 sentences about why they chose the present for her and why they
think she will like it.
Drama
As a group ask each child to imagine that they are in the tower and have a fantastic
pair of binoculars that can see far, far away. Ask each child to describe what they can you
see through the binoculars and get the class to mime what they can see e.g., a tree, the sea,
children playing ball etc as a tableaux/freeze frame.

Our house
Get the children to draw a picture of their house and each member of their family
that cares for them. Ask them to write the name of each person they have drawn on
the picture and say how old they are and the country where they were born.
Put all of the images together on the wall to create a street where the class lives. Ask
children to volunteer to tell the class about their family, their home and where they come
from. Don’t forget to send us a picture at hello@tutti-frutti.org.uk
