• What pilgrims signed when landed in new world; first document signed in new world

• Pamphlet by Thomas Paine questioned why GB should rule colonies; helped cause anger in colonies

• Est. Conn. As new colony with religious freedom

• Southern states wouldn’t sign Const. till Bill of Rights created protecting rights of states and individuals against abusive power of federal govt.

• Granted to businessmen to est. colony in VA to find gold and other resources

• Line across Appalachian Mts. Where colonists couldn’t cross after French and Indian War; made them angry b/c they already owned land there

• Gave GB cntrl over N. America up to the Mississippi River; France gave Canadian claims to GB and Spanish gave FL to Brit

• Msg to King George III about what terrible things he did and why they deserve independnece; ‘all men are created equal’ and ‘consent of the governed’

• Ended Rev. War; gave America cntrl of land to the Miss. River

• Slaves in the south would be counted as 3/5 a white male for representation in Congress purposes
