Much as I love eating out, I also love to eat in. Nothing makes mehappier than a trip to my favourite food shops and a day in thekitchen. Given that we have been moving of late, that has not been
high on my list of priorities and let’s face it, half the kitchen stuff, of which Ihave more than enough, has been packed away in boxes, some of whichwere marked bedroom.
Given my love of cooking I havenever had a really fabulous kitchen ofmy own, although I have cooked insome great ones owned byfriends. Kitchen envy mightbe my greatest vice.
While searchingfor a new home, MrR pointed out thatwe should try tofind somewherewith a good kitchen.To be honest I washappy to findsomewhere withrooms big enough fortwo big blokes like us.
But I have to saythat my new kitchen – Isay ‘my’ because Mr Rdoes not often hit those potsand pans except forwashing up – is nothalf bad. It doesn’thave any mod consbut that’s good. Itdoes have lots ofcupboards and work-surfaces and it hasinspired me to startcooking again, bigpans of food and lots of soups, including my speciality of salad soup.
I know it sounds weird but I hate waste so any leftover salad gets throwninto stock and brought to a simmer – then whizzed lightly with the stickblender. It’s light and low in calories and a damn sight tastier than compost,which I really don’t have room for.
How I love my left-overs, they’re greener than green and they feel like foodfor free. By the way, a bit of dressing on that salad simply gives the broth anice kick. Try it.

O n my way home from Edinburgh,the subject of last week’s column,I took the opportunity to visit
Lancaster to see one of England’sgreatest follies.
Brighton and Hove has more than itsfair share of ornamental edifices. Fromthe ornate clock towers in Preston Parkand Blaker’s Park to the ornamentalarches of St Nicholas’ Churchyard andthe Royal Pavilion, we are blessedlocally with many curious decorativestructures. But not one compares to theAshton Memorial.
James Williamson (later Lord Ashton)and his father, also called JamesWilliamson, were hugely successfulLancaster-based oil cloth producers. In1877, they transformed the openmoorlands and former stone quarries abovethe city into the magnificent Williamson Park.
A temple, palm house and fountain thatwere designed by respected architect Sir JohnBelcher were added to the park in 1904. It wasBelcher’s model of the proposed AshtonMemorial that was exhibited at the RoyalAcademy in 1906. Its construction began thenext year and it opened in 1909 as a memorialto Lord Ashton’s family.
The 150ft tower looms over the glorioussurrounding parkland but also aboveLancaster itself and the distant Morecambebay. In true Edwardian Baroque splendour,there are huge columns with Doric andComposite capitals along with an immensecopper dome. The Portland stone structurefeatures two huge domed rooms, one abovethe other, with various staircases andbalconies. A black, white and red marble floor greets guests before they climb tothe viewing gallery and enjoy the panoramic views. Small signs embedded inthe gallery’s stone balustrade point to notable landmarks including LancasterCastle, Blackpool Tower and even the Isle of Man.
The Ashton Memorial was conceived as a solid stone structure but cheapermaterials were used in places such as brick, steel and concrete. By 1920, majorrepairs were necessary. I can actually remember it being closed when I playednearby, as a child, whilst visiting Lancaster to see my grandmother. It openedagain in 1987. My dad used to tell me how he remembered it as a child. Whilst atschool, he witnessed the dome burning, as did many other residents, when thememorial was badly damaged by fire in 1962.
It’s a truism that buildings within childhood memories appear much smallerin person than envisaged. The Ashton Memorial, around which I once loved toplay, looked even bigger when I returned to explore again.Get in touch: robert@buildingopinions.com or www.buildingopinions.com
I t is half term and I’ve spent most of the week trying to keep The SmallDaughter at least ten metres away from the Wii. On that note, it really getsme that although ‘metres’ comes up on the spellcheck, Wii doesn’t... Bah!
modern life really gets on my t*** sometimes. I have also spent some of theweek trying to arrange the scattering of my mother’s ashes in her chosenlocation, which is proving rather more tricky than I had ever imagined. Mymother was a formidable woman when alive and is proving to be still fairlydifficult from her urn. On her death bed, she dictated that she absolutely mustbe scattered at the local girl guide and boy scout Headquarters. Admittedly,she did help to build said HQ through an exhaustive amount of fundraising inthe 1970s, but having one’s ashes scattered there seems to be a can of worms.
Alas I have already peeled backthe lid of this particular can byalerting a member of the local trefoilof my mother’s wishes and havebeen given two options; the firstoption is to sneak into the grounds,scatter the ashes and answerquestions later, should anyone seeus. The second option is to seekpermission from ‘The Board’, whomeet at the HQ on the first of everymonth. It is to be noted here that ‘The Board’ has already refused permission forplaques and memorial trees in the past. Furthermore, in order to get a contactname within ‘The Board’ I have to get in touch with the man who made the verylong-winded speech at the funeral... I fear I have to go for option two, although afriend did suggest standing in the neighbouring field with a leaf-blower.
On a more interesting note, I have discovered that not all of myneighbours are millionaire bankers with kids at private school.Unfortunately, said neighbours appear to be living in the bottom of mygarden and the detritus left behind suggests that they are not exactlyfairies. Admittedly, my garden is generally in a bit of a state, as I onlyactually go in there to tend to it a handful of times per year. The very end ofthe garden is a miniature forest and provides a habitat for foxes andsquirrels and now, apparently vagrants. While in there the other daybegrudgingly cutting back all manner of foliage, I discovered about half atonne of old sandwich packets, McDonald’s wrappers and Doritos packets.There was also an old piece of wood laid out with a sleeping-bag on top of it. Ihave to say that I don’t actually mind people sleeping in my garden, but I doobject to them leaving their litter behind them when they leave. I also fearthat, where the ‘bed’ was positioned, they may wake up with The Big Son’ssize 11 foot imprinted on their face if TBS forgets his key and has to use the‘rear entrance’ to the house.

W ith three friends about to become parents for the first time, I thoughtI’d re-cap on Things I’ve Learnt As A Parent. Each one is representedby a line on my face that people assume indicates wisdom. (They’re
wrong of course; they just indicate I’ve got lines on my face.) Learn to distract. If kids are annoyed that a programme isn’t on TV, don’t
try and reason with them. Instead point out that a cloud in the sky outsidelooks like a dinosaur! Even if it doesn’t. (P.S Vary this. The cloud/dinosaurcombo won’t work indefinitely). To a non-parent it probably looks like you’rein denial. I deny this. It’s just survival.
Never announce plans inadvance. If there’s the possibilityof a trip to the park in fourhours, never announce it earlieror you’ll have a small childholding their shoes. Bad thingsshouldn‘t be mentioned either. Asupermarket trip proposed threedays away can cause writhingon the floor right now.
Children are illogical. Dealwith it. Non-parents might thinka toy should be a car, a doll, ateddy, but it’s more likely to be aset of keys, gravel inside amatchbox or a comb forced intoa shoe. These are the things theunder-3 will want to cuddle on along journey. Talking of shoes,slip-ons, the ugliest shoe in theworld, are a parent’s lifesaver.Laces are for people with (free)time on their (free) hands.Choose all clothes for practical,rather than aesthetic reasons.
Never give two siblingsdifferent treats. You may as wellsay ‘Kid A, you have Poland, andKid B, you have a whole set of tanks.’ It doesn’t work. It causes conflict. Get them both vanilla ice cream/Poland (*delete as applicable).
What else have I learnt as a parent? There’s no such thing as a perfectpushchair. Let’s not get boring about this (too late, you shout) and just sayat different times you’ll value mobility, weight, comfort, a cup-holder etc.Wake up at the back. Where was I? I’ve learnt, as a parent, you’ve got to getused to conversations being interrupted. To talk in bursts and not beoffended when someone else stops mid-sentence to shout something to theirown child. Never start again from the beginning or you’ll never make it pastthe same point. (I made this same mistake watching Inception.)
I’m running out of space. I’ve learnt also that jigsaws are a pain to tidyaway, but Russian dolls are worse. I’ve learnt that young children’s books arerepetitive (get over it), that sleep is like gold dust. I’ve realised that there’san awful lot of plastic in the world, think very carefully before buying a toythat speaks, and I’ve learnt never, ever, turn away an offer of help.
I n half term we visitedmy mum who lives inLondon. My mother
commented; “You alwaysarrive and then fallasleep!” She soundedsurprised by her ownobservation. I wanted todefensively list reasons asto why this lone parentwould possibly arrive ather mothers after a longjourney on two trains, andtwo buses with a five yearold and want to collapse. Ididn’t. I wearily mouthedthe words “tired”. But inmy head I thought, ‘it’s along journey with a smallchild’, and ‘Mother you’vejust fed me a home-maderoast dinner!’
Never mind the factthat I’m the permanentsole carer of a small child.When I arrive at mymum’s I literally justunfold, my body exclaims, ‘Nana’s here! She loves to spend time with hergranddaughter’. Usually when people have my daughter for a few hours I stillfeel on duty, like I can’t turn off the phone in case she needs rushing tohospital or something. I feel I am always on call. And I feel like I need to sayabout a million thank yous when I collect her.
Whereas when Nana takes her to the park, I feel like Nana is getting loadsout of it for herself, it’s mutually beneficial, its not as a favour to me and forsome reason this makes me more at ease. So I go into an exhausted comanot long after entering my mum’s house. I eat, then fall sleep like a teenager.My mum got abit cross at me when she asked if I wanted to come to the parkwith them. I said no through bleary eyes. Why would I want to go to the parkwhen I can have a guilt free rest? I go to the park all the time. I look after mychild 24/7, every month, about 350 days a year. To hell with rhodium and goldprices, guilt free rests are the most valuable thing in the world to me!
I seem to be only able to have a guilt free rest when either my mother orher dad has her every half year. Everyone else I feel like they are doing it as afavour. I am always saying thank you. ‘Thanks for looking after her while I goto Aldi.’ ‘Thanks for taking her while I have the runs.’ And ‘thanks for lookingafter her while I go home and have an important snog with my boyfriend’,[some snogs are important). It sounds funny, but it’s so nice not having tosay thank you to my mum. She had a great time at the a park, if anything shewants to say thank-you for the adventure. This truly makes me relaxed. Iwonder, that if I become a grandparent and my daughter walks in andcollapses handing over her child, whether I would be miffed. Probably,because I’d miss my daughter too...
