SCIENCE FORUM PROVIDES QUANTUM LEAP
Thomas said, "My ultimate dream is to make science equally accessible to all people across the planet, to make it universal, with no constraints due to localised issues such as economy, political stability or technological constraints ... To create a world where within science there are no borders, just ideas."

Once again, our results are strong and above NSW DEC average in all domains. Our Year 9 results are also above State All in every domain, which includes the combined data
for all selective, independent, grammar, catholic and state comprehensive schools. Most pleasing, our focus on writing strategies across the school in 2014/15 is paying dividends in learning outcomes. The table below shows the average growth from years 7 to 9 for the past three years, highlighting its impact.
WRITING GROWTH

Year 7 average performance:
DOMAIN SCHOOL STATE
READING 559.2 538.9
WRITING 518.2 497.3
SPELLING 566.1 547.3
GRAMMAR 549.6 535.1
NUMERACY 546.1 540.7
Year 9 average performance:
DOMAIN SCHOOL STATE
READING 586.9 573.1
WRITING 552.1 526.3
SPELLING 599.3 583.6
GRAMMAR 576.8 561.5
NUMERACY 604.0 591.0
Our average growth from Year 7 to 9 is Reading +35.0, Writing +38.0, Spelling +33.7, Grammar & Punctuation +25.7 and Numeracy +43.6 points. These results exceed NSW DEC expected growth.
These results are important for us to assist students with their learning and the data we receive is very valuable at charting the progress of each individual student. These tests do not test the curriculum taught, rather they demonstrate the individual student’s capacity to access that curriculum through their mastery of literacy and numeracy. 2015-2016 SENIOR STUDENT EXECUTIVE
A vote was undertaken by staff and Year 11 students to elect three boys and girls to be part of the Senior Student Executive, consisting of School Captain, Vice-Captain and Senior Prefect. Congratulations to: Girls: Elle Bright, Lisa Cochrane and Milly Hughes Boys: Andrew Gay, Zac Hudson and Lachlan Rinkin
An interview will be held on 28 August to determine these leadership positions.
Tell Them From Me is an online survey system devised by The Learning Bar that helps schools capture the views of
students, teachers and parents. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. At Lambton High School we are care about the views of our parent community and have provided an opportunity for feedback. The survey is anonymous and the results will be
compiled and presented by The Learning Bar. Participation in the survey is entirely voluntary. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents

VISUAL ART EXHIBITION
YEAR 10 SUBJECT SELECTION
Last week we published the Year 10-11 subject selection outcome to students and I would like to reconfirm the process. We used a program, EDVAL, which is used by a large number

of schools across the state to determine the best fit for student preferences. Students were advised at year assemblies, Careers lessons, the subject selection evening and individual PLP meeting, that preferences order was an important consideration to the allocation of courses. Our success rate is very high; however, like all schools, this means every student will not get their first 6 preferences. This is mathematically improbable when considering the large number of options available. In 2016 we will deliver 50 classes across 6 timetable lines (plus 2 extension options for English and mathematics). TAFE sits outside our school pattern of study, which means students only receive five school based courses to total 10 units. For lower preferences e.g. 5, 6, 7 or 8, the program identifies this as a lesser priority than 1, 2 3 or 4 and allocates accordingly. Our success rate after English indicates only 35 of 185 students missed one of their first 6 preferences and achieved their first reserve course (7
th preference) which is a great
result. Reserve lists will be established for students requesting changes.
Lambton High School is committed to the welfare of all students in the school and our welfare days are tailored to address relevant issues for each year group, in an attempt to meet the social and emotional needs of our students. The days on Tuesday and Wednesday last week covered the following program: Year 7
- Positive Relationships and Friendships - Home and Cyber Safety
Year 8
- Positive Relationships and Conflict Resolution - Home & Cyber Safety - Cyberbullying - Goal Setting - Authentic Assessment Learning Project
Years 9
- Positive Perspectives - Resume Writing - Respectful Behaviours in the Community, Newcastle
Knights - NRL Welfare Education Program - Clickview: Alcohol will Kill you: UNDISPUTED TRUTH
Years 10
- Team Building - Authentic Assessment Learning Project - Mind Matters Online - Insight, Black Dog Institute - Clickview: Whatever! The Science of Teens – Binge 2
I would like to acknowledge our Student Wellbeing Coordinator, Mrs. Sandland, for organising the program and thank our special guests and school presenters.

TERM 4 SPORT CHOICES
Sport choices for Term 4, 2015 will occur in Week 7 this term. All students currently in years 8, 9 and 10 need to make a choice. Students have been given all information on how to select a sport. Sports that require a note and payment need to be returned to the student office before Friday 11 September 2015. For students who do not choose a sport, a school based sport will be allocated to them. It would be greatly appreciated if parents/caregivers can assist by reminding students to complete their selection. If your student experiences any problems, please contact Mr White in the PDHPE Faculty.
