Minnehaha Creek Watershed DistrictThe Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD) was formed by the Hennepin County Board of Commission-ers in 1967 to address flooding on Minnehaha Creek. In partnership with 29 communities, other agencies and orga-nizations, and concerned citizens, the MCWD monitors, manages, restores and conserves the district’s lakes, streams, and wetlands, and related natural resources. This autonomous government body is funded by small additions to property taxes in the District.
Since its formation, the MCWD has led the region in cut-ting edge research and technical expertise in the areas of water quality monitoring and management. The District designs and builds projects to improve and protect water resources, requires permits for development and other activities, educates the public, and plans for the future of our water and natural resources.
Rules and RegulationsALL boaters must understand the rules and regulations for boating on Lake Minnetonka. Contact the following:
Hennepin County Sheriff ’s Water Patrol (612) 596-9880 or www.waterpatrol.org
Lake Minnetonka Conservation District (LMCD)(952) 745-0789 or www.lmcd.org
Waterway Markers Waterway markers on lakes and navigable streams are to be strictly observed.
The markers are for your safety, the safety of other boaters and for the shoreline management obligations of residents residing on the shorelines of the MCWD. Information on seasonal ordinances are available at public accesses, the LMCD, marinas, and the Sheriff’s Water Patrol.
Exotic Species Most natural systems exist in a wonderfully evolved state of balance. Exotic invasive species can change that balance, because the predators, diseases and natural conditions that keep their populations under control in their original habitat often do not exist in their new homes. The effects of invasion can be devastating, including breaking down food webs and altering natural habitats.
The MCWD works in partnership with many public and private agencies to monitor and control invasive species. For information on exotic species management programs, contact the MCWD at (952) 471-0590, or go towww.minnehahacreek.org.
