KIPPA-RING STATE SCHOOL
Newsletter
Term 1, Week 5 21 February 2018
Dear Parents/Carers, Students and Members of the Kippa-Ring State School Community,
2018 VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTION FEE A special thank you to families who have supported the 2018 Voluntary Contribution Fee of $30.00 per student. This works out to 71 cents per school week! Whilst this seems a very small amount, when all families support the scheme, it can add substantial value to classroom resources. Please seriously consider supporting the scheme, by completing
the form as soon as possible; and before Friday 23 March 2018.
ARTHUR CONLAN - INDIGENOUS ARTIST
Many people comment positively on the artwork and murals that are a
feature of our school. These have been added to over a period of years,
with student involvement being a key to the success of the program.
We have a long standing relationship with Arthur Conlan, the lead artist
who has conducted workshops on site. So here is some of Arthur’s
story…
“I am an Aboriginal artist from the Wakka Wakka / Kulilla people of
Cherbourg in Queensland. I am one of 14 children and a member of a
much larger, extended family.
I started painting from the age of 9 by studying the skills of my uncles.
Year 12 as Murgon SHS, Teacher Aide, Army – 10 years and now a
successful, self-employed Artist.
I have business interests covering wholesale networks supplying
Aboriginal Artworks to businesses throughout Australia and
internationally. I also design and produce my own line of materials and
clothing.”
We appreciate the unique works that are an important part of our
school environment. So many students, staff and community members
have participated in Arthur’s workshops and mural decorations.

Kippa’s Deadly Maths
Challenge Kippa-Ring State School is organizing a “Deadly Maths Challenge”. We
want to make maths fun and are inviting our Kippa families and friends
to come and share some maths activities with their student. Our school
is proud to be trialling the PRIME Futures program, in association with
the Queensland University of Technology (QUT).
The PRIME Futures program targets Prep to Year 9 students and uses
the YuMi Deadly Maths (YDM) approach, to improve student learning
outcomes. It focuses on increasing teachers’ capacity to engage with all
students and deliver mathematics education in an Indigenous context.
Each class has been allocated a 40 minute session to participate in
a variety of fun activities in our school hall, as part of our “Kippa
Deadly Maths Challenge”.
We are inviting parents, family and friends to come and join their
student to complete some of the activities.
Please arrive at our hall 10 minutes before the allocated time, to sign in
the visitor’s book, on a table near the entrance. Our students are really
looking forward to sharing this event with you, so we hope you can
make it!

THOUGHT OF THE WEEK
“A person with little learning is like a frog
who thinks a puddle is a great sea.” - Proverb
Best wishes,
Alan Brooks – Principal & Rebecca Campbell - Deputy Principal
STUDENT TIPS - POSITIVE MINDSET
1) I Can Do It means thinking that when learning something new and I
try very hard, I am more likely to be successful than to fail.
2) Accepting Myself - when I make a mistake or don’t understand
something, thinking that I have not failed, I am still proud of me.
3) Taking Risks - thinking that it’s good to try to learn new things,
even though I might not be able to do it, yet!
4) Being Independent - thinking that it’s important for me to try new
activities and to speak up, even if others think I’m silly.
5) Setting Goals - thinking that setting a goal for what I want to learn
can help me be more successful at a task.
6) Planning My Time - thinking about how long schoolwork will take
to get done and planning enough time to get it done.
7) Being Tolerant of Others - thinking that when someone is mean to
me or different from me, not thinking that he or she is not a totally
bad person.
8) Playing by the Rules - thinking that by following classroom rules
and expectations, school will be a better place to live and learn.
9) Thinking First - thinking that when someone treats me badly, I need
to think about the best way to act.
10) Social Responsibility - thinking that it is important to help others
with their learning and not be a distraction or in class.

YOU CAN DO IT! PROGRAM
YOU CAN DO IT!
In 2018, we will be continuing our school wide focus on the “You Can Do
It!” Program. “You Can Do It!” is a respected program that identifies the
social and emotional capabilities that all young people need to acquire
in order to be successful in school, experience wellbeing, and have
positive relationships. The You Can Do It! Program will commence in
Term Two and our school wide focus will be Confidence.
To ensure all of our students have a positive start to the 2018 school
year, we are focusing on school-wide and classroom routines and
expectations throughout Term One.
This week, students across our school have been learning about using
the High Five when there is a problem in the classroom or playground.
The High Five is an effective strategy to develop problem-solving
strategies for our students and it can be used at home as well as at
school.
When using the High Five, young people are developing positive social
skills, problem solving skills and resilience. The five steps of the High Five
are:
1. Talk Friendly
2. Talk Firmly
3. Ignore
4. Walk Away
5. Report
Students have been learning about all five steps of the High Five, but
there has been a strong focus on Step 5: Report. It’s important for
students to report incidents to the nearest staff member as soon as
possible so that the incident can be investigated. Reporting an incident
is very different to ‘dobbing’ on another student. Here are some ways in
which reporting is different to dobbing:
Reporting Dobbing
Purpose is to keep people safe Trying to get somebody else in
trouble
Need help from an adult to solve
problems
Can handle the problem by
yourself
Important Not Important
Harmful and dangerous
situations
Harmless situations
Behaviour is mean and
deliberate
Behaviour is accidental
We have included a copy of the High Five Hand with explanations for
you to share with your children at home.

Semester 1 Inter-school Sport:
Girls Netball - “Redcliffe Netball Association Courts”, Main

PREP VISION SCREENING
PREP VISION SCREENING OPPORTUNITY
Good vision is important for children’s educational, physical and social
development, so the earlier a problem is detected, the better the
treatment outcomes.
This year, we have again been fortunate to be included in the Children’s Health Queensland (CHQ) vision screening program for Prep children.
This free vision screen is a wonderful opportunity and will be on 28 February & 1 March.
A Registered Nurse will visit our school during school hours, to provide this service. After the screening, parents will be informed of the results in writing. All Prep students will receive an envelope with further information about the screening and a consent form.

AROUND THE SCHOOL NEWS
VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTION SCHEME Whilst the Department of Education, Training and Employment (DETE)
funds our school to provide instruction and core educational services to
students, we rely on families to make an annual contribution to assist us
in providing and enhanced level of resources for our school programs via
a Voluntary Contribution Fee.
Whilst the Contribution Fee is voluntary, it ensures that well-resourced
learning remains the key focus for all students. This year, parents with
students in Years 1 to 6 are invited to join the Voluntary Contribution
Scheme with payment of $30.00 per student.
Your contributions will provide additional support in the following areas:
Provision for support resources and consumables in all Key
Learning areas, including Art and Science consumables
Enhancement of classroom resources: additional student
reference books.
Reproduced class materials which complement and/or
substitute for text books
Additional computer software
Forms were sent home with students earlier this month. Please
complete, sign and return the forms to the office, with payment before
Friday 23 March, even if you do not wish to participate in the scheme. If
you require another form, please contact the ladies in the office.
Please note: The Contribution Fee does not cover extra-curricular
activities such as excursions, interschool sport etc.
WOOLWORTH’S EARN & LEARN Our learning resources were delivered to school yesterday. Here are our
two School Captains, with representatives from Woolworths.
We appreciate the support of so many people. As you can see, we
reaped the rewards of your interest and investment in student learning.
We will be displaying the resources at assembly on Monday, then they
will be available across the school.

HEALTH ALERT Gastroenteritis
We have had a number of students absent from school over the past
week or so, due to having a ‘Gastro Bug’ commonly known as
Gastroenteritis. This ‘bug’ is a common illness that can cause vomiting
and diarrhoea. Many types of gastro are easily spread, and are not
usually serious, but can make you very dehydrated. Milder forms can be
managed at home by drinking fluids. See a doctor immediately if your
child cannot hold down a sip of liquid, or has dehydration.
Gastro should only last for a few days and doesn’t usually require
medication. If you suspect that your child is suffering from a bout of
‘gastro,’ it is very important that they stay at home until the symptoms
have been gone for at least 24 hours, to prevent the spread of it to
others.
NOTE: In 2017, we trialled the use of ‘automatic anti-bacterial foam
dispensers’, to further improve hygiene. This has been a very successful
provision, so will continue this year.
Head Lice
Head Lice are on the move again! Head lice do not discriminate. It
doesn’t matter if your hair is long or
short, clean or dirty, children are
bound to get head lice at some stage
during their schooling.
Head Lice are tiny insect parasites that
live in people’s hair and feed on the
skin on their scalp. They lay eggs (nits)
on the hair closest to the scalp. Head Lice are not dangerous, and are
not a sign of poor hygiene.
Head Lice are spread by head to head contact with another person who
has head lice. They can run from one head to another in seconds. They
cannot fly, jump or swim, but they can swing from one hair to another.
An itchy scalp is usually the first sign that your child may have head lice.
The itchiness though can take weeks to develop. You may also be able
to see head lice crawling through the hair. Adult lice are usually dark
brown and about 2 -3 mm long. Young lice are harder to see as they are
often a lighter brown colour and smaller in size. Eggs will be attached to
the hair shaft and hard to see, as they are grey-white in colour and
about the size of a grain of salt.
If you think your child may have head lice, please check and treat your
child’s hair as soon as you can. A cheap, effective way of checking and
treating head lice, is the 10 day hair conditioner and comb method. This
method focuses on removing adult head lice from hair and breaking the
egg laying cycle.
Step 1: Apply plenty of hair conditioner (home brands work just as well
as more expensive ones) to dry hair until all the hair is covered. The
conditioner slows the head lice down so they can be trapped in the
comb. Comb the conditioner through the hair with an ordinary comb or
brush.
Step 2: Separate the hair into section and gently comb each section one
at a time with a metal, fine tooth ‘nit comb’ in 4 directions.
Step 3: After brushing through each section, wipe the conditioner from
the comb onto a white paper towel or tissue and check for head lice.
Continue combing until each section of the hair has been checked.
Step 4: When you have finished, wash the conditioner out and dry the
hair.
If head lice are found, it is important to do these steps every few days,
over a 10 day period.
