Keys to Success in Parent-Savvy Schools

Think of us as internal partners, not

merely external consumers. It may help us behave as if

we are.

It’s a culture thing.

Be clear in your own mind about WHY you want parents involved and then be specific

about WHAT you want parents to do.

It’s about

expectations.

Help us to understand what you expect of our children. Help us to see

how these expectations are directly linked to a high

standard of learning.

It’s about trust.

Gain our confidence and trust by gearing

your performance as if your own child

depended on it.

Ours do.

It’s about needs.

Recognize that we have as many different levels

of readiness as our students. Honor where each of us is and build

from there.

It’s about morale.

Call us with good news, not just the

Ask us to be mentors for other parents who may not be inclined to be

involved or know what to do. As parents we need to

lean on, learn from, and lead each other.

It’s about comfort zones.

For those of us who are reluctant to come to school to see you, come to our

homes or hold a group meeting at a neutral site in our neighborhood. We

know this may be a lot to ask, but without it, we’ll never get the message about how important our involvement is. Crossing the comfort zones of race, economics, and language is probably

hard for you too.

It’s about shared

decision-making.

Involve more of us in real planning at the school and district levels. When we are part of the process,

you might stop seeing us as just part of the

problem.

It’s about teaching

and learning.

Focus our conversations on

teaching and learning, and recognize when we may be trying to

focus yours.

It’s about supporting a climate

for change.

Tap those of us who share your vision for change. Engage us in the big work and give

us credence as legitimate players.

It’s about conviction.

Don’t stop short of identifying the barriers to our involvement.

A school culture that truly believes the parent connection is important to student success will do whatever it takes to make it happen—including allocating

community and school resources.
