“Public Hostel: Courtyard” designed by Adrian DefazReminiscent and influenced by Pompeii residencies, the form of this hostel embraces and frames a central courtyard, where volunteers and visitors can enjoy an outdoor seating and leisure space within their living quarters. Facing the main cabin, the open courtyard area invites visitors to enjoy an additional communal space within the complex. Simple in structure, form, and assembly, this is straightforward in its construction. Using only timber, metal roofing, and simple windows, the design produces an assembly composed of simple elements including timber and raft structure, dowel screens, shingle siding, louvre system, and a compartmentalized flooring system.

The intent behind the design reflects the requirements of the client: cost-efficient, simple and straightforward, ease of assembly and dis-assembly, and complaisant with the year-round climate at Cockspur Island. Both construction and maintenance are environmentally sustainable. Other aesthetic features that are integrated onto the design include the use of pergolas as part of the main entrance, along with a gate similar to that of the common picket fence design. The design portrays the beauty of simplicity, while respecting the needs of the client.
