Patron Saint Thename“HolyChild”isoneofseveraltitles(e.g.,ChristChild,InfantJesus,Divineinfant)usedtorefertoJesusChristfromhisbirthtotheageof12.Attheageof13,JesuswouldhavebeenconsideredanadultaccordingtoJewishcustomandviewedasreadytobeginmakingdecisionsabouthislifeandtofindmeaningandpurposeforhislife.Jesushimselfidentifiedwithchildrenandtaughthisdisciplesto“changeandbecomelikelittlechildren…[to]enterthekingdomofheaven”(Matthew18:3).WearetoreceiveeverythingasagiftfromGodandbetotallydependentuponGodwhosuppliesallofourneeds.Wearenottoseekstatusandrankbuttobehumbleservants.Wearetobeteachableandunworldly.Wearealsotowelcomechildrenforwhenwedo,wewelcomeJesus.(Matthew18:1-4,Mark9:33-37;Luke9:46-48)WeseeintheHolyChild,therefore,specialattributessuchas,humility,obedience,faithfulnessandspiritualgrowthandmaturitythatwearecalledtoimitate.

Electronic Devices GoverningthepresenceofanduseinschoolsofelectronicormobiledevicessuchascellphonesissubjecttotheexpectationsoflearnersunderSection12oftheSchoolActandiscoveredundertheCCSDStudentCodeofConduct(AP351-Sections16and17).Specifictoelectronicmobiledevices,thefollowingunacceptablebehaviorsincludebutarenotlimitedto:

Holy Child Electronic Devices Acceptable Use Agreement Electronicdevicescanbeavaluableeducationaltoolwhenusedappropriately.ThefollowingisalistofourelectronicdeviceexpectationsatHolyChildSchool.1.Iwillonlyusemyelectronicdevicewhenapprovedbymyteacherduringtheirclass.2.IunderstandImustnotuseelectronicdevicesinschoolcelebration/assemblies,washroomsandchange-roomsandthelunchroom.Iunderstandthatlunchtimeisatimetosocializefacetoface.

3.IwillonlyaccesssitesatschoolthatareappropriateandreflectiveofourCatholicvalues.4.Iwillneverusemydevicetorecordothers,unlessIhavepermissionfromateacherforaschoolrelatedassignmentorproject.Iwillnottakepictures/videosofstudents,stafforvisitorsofHolyChildSchool,withouttheirpermissionnorpostthemtoSocialMedia.

Progressive Discipline Plan: Studentswhoengageinunacceptablebehaviorwillbeheldaccountablethroughtheschool’sprogressivedisciplineplan.Consistentandlogicalconsequences,ratherthanpunitivemeasures,areimportanttosupport

studentsinmakingappropriatechoicesandhelpshapetheirfutureactions.Inanydisciplinarysituation,eachstudentwillbedealtwithonanindividualbasis,andwilltakeintoaccountthestudent’sage,maturityandindividualcircumstances.Aswell,parentalordistrictinvolvementmayberequestedtosupportschooldisciplineprocedures.Theschool’suseoftheprogressivedisciplineplanwilldeterminetheexpectations,consequencesandtheprogressionofactionstobetakendependingontheseverityand/orfrequencyoftheoccurrences.Atalltimes,teachersandadministratorswillusetheirprofessionaljudgmentinapplyingconsequences.Consequencesmusthaveapositiveeffectonthestudent’sjourneythroughreconciliation,eitherformallyorinformally,withtheschoolcommunityandthoseaffectedbythestudent’sbehaviour.Thefollowingconsequencesareprogressiveintheirdegreeofinterventionandwillbeenacteddependingonthefrequencyandseverityofoccurrences.Theywillbeappliedconsistentlyandequallytoallstudents,notwithstandingtheindividualdifferencesofchildrenandtheuniquenessofspecificcircumstancesandsituations.Progressivedisciplineisawhole-schoolapproachthatutilizesacontinuumofinterventions,supports,andconsequences,including:

Interventionsandconsequencesincreasewhen:

Interventionsandconsequencesmayinclude,butarenotlimitedto,thefollowing:

● informalconferences;● restrictionofprivileges;● parentconferences;● in-schoolsuspensions;● riskassessment;● suspension/expulsion(AP356);● studentredirection● BehaviourSupportPlan(aspartoftheLearnerSupportPlan);● involvementofInstructionalServicesandsupports;● involvementofexternalservicesandsupports.

Theprincipalmayinvolvepoliceindisciplinarymatterswhencriminalactivityhasbecomeevident.Whenpoliceareinvolved,theprincipalwillconductaseparate,parallelinvestigationattheschoollevelandprovidedisciplinaryactionseparatefromanycriminalchargesthatmaybeissued.

Suspension Seriousinfractionsofschoolexpectationscanresultinasuspension.Astudentundersuspensionfromschoolmaynotenterschoolpropertyduringthetermofsuspension.Asuspendedstudentmaynotparticipateinorattendanyschoolactivityorathleticeventduringthetimeofthesuspension.

Studentsupport:Supportwillbeprovidedtostudentsimpactedbyinappropriatebehaviourandtothosestudentswhoengageininappropriatebehaviour.Thisissignificantbecausewhilethestudentcodeofconductmustaddresstheconsequencesforinappropriatebehaviour,suchasbullying,italsoensuresthatsupport(notjustconsequences)isprovidedtothosestudentswhoengageinunacceptablebehaviour.Examplesofhowsupportcouldbeprovidedtostudentswhohaveengagedinunacceptablebehaviourincludementoring,restorativeprocesses,regularcheck-inswithteachersorschools’counsellors,counselling,etc.

Considerationofstudentdiversity:

TheSchoolActrequiresthatthestudentcodeofconductaddressconsequencesforunacceptablebehaviourandthatthesereasonableconsequencestakeintoaccountthestudent’sage,maturityandindividualcircumstances.Thespecificcircumstancesofthesituationandofthestudentneedtobetakenintoaccountwhendeterminingappropriateconsequences.Forexample,anydiverseneedsthatthestudenthas–whethertheyarephysical,behavioural,communicational,mentalhealth,trauma,etc.–mustbeconsidered.Theageandmaturityofstudentsinvolvedshouldbeconsideredwhendeterminingtheconsequencesandsupportrequired.

Field Trips Thedistrictarrangesforstudents/childreninthedistricttoparticipateinfieldtrips,tours,off-campusactivities,athleticeventsand/orotherexcursions(“fieldtrip”),which,intheopinionofthedistrict,havedefiniteeducational,athleticorculturalvalue.Thedistrict,throughtherelevantschool,willprovideparents/legalguardiansaFieldTripConsentformwhichshallincludethefollowingparticularsofanyfieldtriptwoweeks,ifpossible,andatleastthreeschooldays,atminimum,priortotheintendeddateofthefieldtrip:(a) destination;(b) arrangedsupervision;(c) date(s)andtime(s);(d) transportationplans;(e) associatedrisksthatshouldbehighlightedregardingthefieldtrip;(f) costs,ifany;(g) atelephonenumberthroughwhichadditionalinformationonthefieldtripmaybeobtained;and,(h) parent/legalguardianconsentandwaiverform.

Itistheparents/legalguardiansresponsibilitytoadvisetheschoolofanymedicalcondition(s)thatmayaffectthestudent/child’sparticipationinthefieldtrip.Parents/legalguardiansneedtounderstandthatanymedicalinformationrequestedwouldbecollectedforthepurposeofstudentsafetyduringfieldtrips,includingstudentathleticevents(whicharegenerallyconsideredtohaveaninherentelementofriskofinjurydespiteallsafetyprecautions),and,thatintheeventofamedicalemergency,thesupervisingteacheroranyoneofthevolunteerchaperonesmayseekmedicaladviceand/ortreatmentdeemednecessaryforthehealthandsafetyofthestudent/childandtheparent/legalguardianshallbefinanciallyliablefortheprovisionofsuchmedicalemergencyservices.Parents/legalguardiansshallagreetoreleaseandholdharmlesstheCalgaryCatholicSchoolDistrict,theschool,andtheirrespectiveagents,servantsandemployees,fromandagainstanyandallclaimsfordamagesorbodilyinjuriesarisingoutofthestudent/child’sparticipationinanauthorizedfieldtrip.thedistrictwill,however,beresponsibleforanyinjuriesanddamagessufferedbythestudentwhileparticipatinginanysuchfieldtripthatarisesasaresultofthenegligenceofthedistrict.

Parents/legalguardianshavetherighttoadvisethedistrict,throughtherelevantschool,inwriting,atleasttwoschooldaysbeforethecommencementofanyparticularfieldtrip,thattheydonotconsenttothestudent/childparticipatinginthefieldtrip,inwhicheventtheirconsentandauthorizationwillbeconsideredaswithdrawnfortheparticularfieldtripandthestudentshallnotbeallowedtoparticipateinsuchfieldtrip.
