Area & Origin• “Jews” was first used in the bible• Exiled from the Land Of Israel when the Kingdom

of Judah was defeated by the Babylonians• All Jews are descendants of Judah, according to

the bible• Originate from Israel (therefore Jews are

descendants of the Israelites, as there is no country of “Jewland”)

Where in Canada did they settle?• First arrived in the 1830’s• Forbidden to settle in New France, as they

were not Catholics• Forced to take up residence in Southern

Canada

What caused the Jews to leave their countries?

• The Jews were spread throughout Europe, and faced one major problem: religious persecution (especially in Russia)

• Prior to 1939, the Jews came from all over Europe

• During and after 1939, most of the Jews came from Nazi Germany, where the persecution was at it’s worst

What made the Jews want to come to Canada?

• Family members told them of the better lifestyle that Canada had to offer them

• They could practice their ways of life in freedom • Had good land for them to cultivate

What was Canada’s Immigration Policy at the time?

• In the New World, Jews were forbidden from settling in French colonies, based upon their religion

• In 1939, Canada refused about 800,000 Jews from entering the country
