“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do
you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.”
(Isaiah 43:18-19)
“Look at the nations and watch—and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were
told.” (Habakkuk 1:5)

Transitional chapter
Big Pictureof Hebrews Chapter 10
from primarily didactic to primarily application
Concerned with how this information will change the way we live?
The chapter starts with somewhat of a summary and clarification.
Four categories by way of brief observation:
Once for ALL
“But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.”
Heb. 9:26b
Once for ALL
“But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.”
Heb. 9:26b
“The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it
can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship.
If it could, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins.”
Heb. 10: 1-2

Heb. 10:1-2
Once for ALL
“First he said, ‘Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you
pleased with them’ (although the law required them to be made). Then he said, ‘Here I am, I have come to do
your will.’ He sets aside the first to establish the second. And by that will we have been made holy through the
sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.Heb. 10:8-9

“For this reason it (the law) can never…make perfect those who draw near to worship.”
Heb. 10:1b
“But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins, because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats
to take away sins.”Heb. 10:3-4
“Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties…which can never take away sins.”
Heb. 10:11

The Contrast in Jesus
“…we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”
Heb. 10:10
“…by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.”
Heb. 10:14
How then are we to live?
Verses 19-25A call to--and directives for--how to persevere in Christ!
“by a new and living way”
“since we have a great high priest over the house of God”
LET US…
Jesus o Draw near to God
LET US (choose wisely)
o Hold unswervingly to the hope we profess
o Consider how we may spur one another on
o Not give up meeting together
o Encourage one another
If we choose foolishly…
“If we deliberately keep on sinning…”v 26
Trample the Son of God under foot and treat as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant…v 29
and insult the Spirit of grace v 29
If we try and live this life by our own fleshly strategies and ignore and tread upon the grace provided for us in
Jesus, choosing our own way of living rather than trusting Jesus our “new and living way,” then…
“It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” v 31
“Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you stood your ground in a great contest
in the face of suffering. Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you
stood side by side with those who were so treated. You sympathized with those in prison and joyfully accepted
the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions. So
do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have
done the will of God you will receive what he has promised.”
Hebrews 10:32-36

“But my righteous one will live by faith.
And if he shrinks back I will not be pleased with him.
Hebrews 10:38
“But my righteous one will live by faith.
And if he shrinks back I will not be pleased with him.
But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed,
Hebrews 10:38-39
“But my righteous one will live by faith.
And if he shrinks back I will not be pleased with him.
But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed,
but of those who believe and are saved.”
Hebrews 10:38-39

Hebrews 10:38-39
What situations are you facing today that make you want to pull back in fear?
Are you facing issues where you have chosen not to draw near to God and believe His
promises?
Not cling to the hope that He who promised is faithful!
Jesus
With all the chaos in the world and the issues our country is facing?
How is your heart doing today?
It is very possible that we are facing epoch changes, paradigm shifts of a similar magnitude
that the people were facing in Hebrews!
Jesus
With ongoing economic struggles in the West and continued economic growth in much of Asia and the
East.
In my life time we have seen the dramatic shift of the epicenter of Christendom.
“Look at the nations and watch—and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do
something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told.”
(Habakkuk 1:5)
Jesus
We are not of those who shrink back;We are of those who have been graced to believe!
By God’s Amazing Gracegiven to us in Christ alone
In just a little while, He who is coming will come!
In the grace and power of Jesus aloneLET US:
Draw near to God
Hold to the hope that He who promised is faithful
Think about how to spur each other on to love and caring well for others
NOT give up meeting togetherEncourage one another more and more
In just a little whileHe who is coming will come!
