rainsthelastcoupleofmonths.Butwestillhaveagroupworkingwiththecity,tryingtomakesuretheyaddressthisissue.Thegoodnewsisthecityisplanningtohireastaffpersontofocusfulltimeonthisproblem.Youshouldcall3-1-1andreporteverytimethereishogdamagetoyourproperty.Thisisveryimportant.Itseemsthatbreak-insandtheftshaveincreasedintheneighborhood
withthebadeconomy.IthelpsJestergetmorepoliceattentionifallincidentsarereported.Call9-1-1toreportlife-threateningincidents–crimesthatareinprogressandallseriousorviolentcrimes.Youcannowcall3-1-1toreportincidentsandsituationsthatarenon-emergencies,notlife-threateningornotcurrentlyinprogress.Use3-1-1torequestinformationfromthePoliceDepartment.We will finish up our work on the median at the Jester Blvd./

CAvernS And CAveSMillions of years ago, the great seas that stood overTexas
depositedthemakingsofthicklayersoflimestone.Asthelandroseandtheseasfell,eonsofrainfallleachedouthollows,deeppits,andundergroundstreambeds,andovertime,thesedeeplyhiddenworldsbuiltasilentbeauty.Today,Texasisriddledwithoverthreethousandknowncavesandsinkholes,mostofthemintheEdwardsPlateauregionofcentralTexas.Themostimportantfactorincaveformationisthepresence
ofcarbondioxideinwater,themainsourceofwhichisfoundinthesoil.Rainsformaweakcarbonicacidthatdrivestheprogressive process of dissolution, a process that is morecommoninlimestonethaninanyothertypeofrock.Fracturesinthelimestoneallowthisweakacidicwatertofillvoidsintherock,andasthewaterfloweventuallydecreasesandthewatertablerecedes,cavesmaybecomedryorpartiallydry.Someofthecarbondioxidethatwasinthewaterisreleased
into the cave atmosphere, causing thewater tobecome lessacidic, and the calcium carbonate dissolved in it begins toform tiny crystals or precipitate. Individual crystals build

constant darkness, temperature, and relative humidity createsunique and interesting inhabitants. Scientists believe that manyarerelicspecies,isolatedpopulationsthatwerelefttofollowtheirownevolutionarypath.Thosespeciestrulyadaptedtocaveshavereducedeyes&pigment,slenderbodies,andextralonglegs,whichallowstheanimaltospreaditselfoveralargersurfaceareainsuchafood-poorenvironment.TheseextremeadaptationscanbeseeninmanyofcentralTexas’threatenedandendangeredspeciessuchas cave salamanders, beetles, spiders, pseudoscorpions, andothercaveinvertebrates.WhileseveralspeciesofbatsinhabitTexascaves–almost100millioninaboutadozencaves–theyroutinelyleavethecavesinsearchoffoodandthereforeshowtheleastadaptationandrestrictiontotheseenvironments.While many centralTexas caves are considered “wild” and are
exploredmainlybyexpertcavers,geologistsandbiologists, sevenofthesecavesareconsidered“show”caves,orcavesthathavebeendeveloped enough tobe enjoyedby the general public. NaturalBridge Caverns, located north of San Antonio, is the largestcommercialcaveinTexas,andfullofdraperies,curtains,stalagmites,andstalactites.CascadeCavernsinBoerne,otherwiseknownasthe“Peep in theDeep”,has a90-footwaterfallwhen conditions arewet.WonderWorldCaveinSanMarcosistheoldestcommercialcaveinTexas,whereyoucanfindceilingsfulloffossilsanddirectlyviewthewatersoftheEdwardsaquiferaswellastheundersideoftheBalconesfaultline.LonghornCavernsinBurnetwasusedforshelterbytheComancheIndiansandforworshipbyalocalchurch,andhaslargecalcitecrystalsfillingitswalls.InnerSpaceCavernsin Georgetown features soda straw ceilings and an undergroundtheaterforeducationalprograms.TheCavernsofSonora,ashortdrivefromSonora,wasdesignatedaNationalNaturalLandmarkin1966,andisoneofthemostactivecavesintheworld,withover95%ofitsformationsstillgrowing.TheCaveWithoutaName,justnortheastofBoerne,holdsthestate’sbestexamplesofcavebacon,oneofwhichisalmost22feetlong!Asuniquefeaturesoftheland,cavesareprotectedbyTexaslaw,

mosquitoeshavearrived.It’stimetotakeactionbutlet’skeepthefamilyprotectedandsafe.Don’t use any mosquito spray that contains DEET (diethyl
toluamide).DEETisaveryeffective insectrepellantbutnot thebestchoiceforthefamilies’health.DEETisaknownneurotoxin,causeskidneyandliverdamageand
hasbeenimplicatedinbirthanddevelopmentaldefects.“Childreninparticularareatriskforsubtlebrainchangescausedbychemicalsintheenvironment,becausetheirskinmorereadilyabsorbsthem,and the chemicalsmorepotently affect their developingnervoussystems.”¹TheWorldHealthOrganization(WHO)statesthatover30%oftheglobalburdenofdiseaseinchildrencanbeattributedtoenvironmentalfactors,includingpesticides.²If thebottleof repellant you areplanning topurchase contains

Mercolaisahealthieroption.Itcontainsseveraloftheessentialoilslistedabove.
Mosquitoesareattractedtolightcoloredclothingespeciallyyellow.Theyzeroinonfragrancesfromscentedbodycareproducts,laundrydetergents and scented fabric softeners.The use of unscentedfragrancefreeproductsdecreasesthefamilies’neurotoxicexposurebutalsokeepsmosquitoessearchingforanothermeal.MosquitoesdonotlikethesmellofgarlicsobyusingaproductcalledMosquitoBarrier(averypotentgarlicsolution)onthelawn,thiswillrepelmosquitoesfromtheyard.Check the external home environment. Be sure to empty any
standing water around the home because this will provide themosquitoeswithabreedingground.Considerputtingupabathouse.Abatcaneatapproximately600mosquitosizedinsectsanhour.Withthesemeasuresinplaceyourfamilywillprobablynotheara
highpitchhumintheearthissummer.Themosquitoeswillfindabetterlocationthanyourhomefortheirnextmeal.
