Behaviorism In the Classroom

Behaviorism

Behaviorism is the prediction and control of human behavior in which introspection and/or independent thinking play no essential part of its teaching methods.

Conditioning occurs through interaction with environment.

Behavior can be studied in a systematic and observable manner with no consideration of internal mental states.

Behaviorism

Classical Conditioning: A technique used in behavioral training in which a naturally occurring stimulus is paired with a response.

Operant Conditioning: A method of learning that happens through rewards and punishments for behavior. Through operant conditioning, an association is made between a behavior and a consequence for that behavior.

Ivan Pavlov(1849-1936)

Pavlov's Dog'sExperiment involving

classical conditioning where when food was presented a bell rang the dog produced saliva and after the dog was able to produce saliva with no presence of food and just the stimulus of the bell.

B.F. Skinner (1904-1990)

Skinner's experiment involved operant conditioning

Skinner's dancing pigeons

Positive and negative reinforcement

Albert Bandura (1925-)

Father of cognitivist movement
