• Born on August 6, 1928 in Pittsburg Pennsylvania

• American

• Died on February 22, 1987

• Believed to be gay

Key Personal Events• When he was 14 years old his father passed away• He graduated from Schenley High School in 1945• Graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology

in 1949, after studying painting and commercial design

• Moved to NYC and worked at Glamour magazine • Became a very successful commercial artist by

working for some of the biggest fashion magazines through out the 1950’s

Key Historical Events

• Popular Culture had a big influence on business that needed to advertize their new goods

• Many people were interested in new food, drinks, clothes, music, and movies

• Warhol worked and traveled around the country with the rock band ‘Violet Underground’ in 1965

Influence of the Art World

• Influenced by American mass consumerism, culture and politics

• Born into the “Advertizing Age”• Influenced by the ideas of Marcel Duchamp who

celebrated and subverted mass culture• He was fascinated by famous stars, and later

became interested in disaster• The combining of these two intrests resulted in

“The Marilyns” after her suicide in 1962

How He influenced the Art World

• He was one of the first artists to apply artistic skills as commercial illustrator.

• He transformed commercial illustration into popular “Pop” art.

• He understood the importance of the “icon”, and how it draws attention, to his art in particular.

Stylistic Traits

1. He is well known for creating ink images with slight color changes

2. Many of his pieces had repetition

3. Bright colors were a part of his artwork, influenced by pop culture

4. He was the pioneer of silk screening. (today it is often used for putting designs onto t-shirts)

of the Marilyn's, and switched it with a different object.

Conclusion

• Andy Warhol, an American artist influenced American art

• He had a unique style of bright colors, repetition, and he introduced us to the silk screen

• He was able to work as a commercial artist while he showed everyone how important ‘pop’ art was

• He understood the power of the icon and used it to build his success
