Wed, Jan 25, 7:00 Presbyterian Church

367 So. Sanderson Way, FB Vireyas

Most of us these days are not spending lots of time outdoors with heavy duty gardening. So what’s an attractive alternative? Vireyas! Christy Hartsell is one of the premier growers of vireyas. He’ll present a program at 7:00 on Wed., Jan. 25 at our general meeting.

Christy will tell us how to plant and care for vireyas. While they are normally grown outdoors they need protection from severe cold weather. They are normally grown in pots so moving them indoors is not a problem. Christy will also show us examples that are worthy of growing.

This is great opportunity for you to expand your unde r s t and ing o f rhododendrons and also your collection by adding these tropical members of the rhododendrons. Imagine some of these tropical plants on your porch and in the background some arboreum specimens you have that originated perhaps in Sikkem up at 12,000 ft in the Himalayas.

Noyo Chapter Need Currently Noyo Chapter does not

have someone responsible for publicity. We need someone to do this. This

is not large responsibility. Mostly it’s getting announcements of our meetings and our Show into the local papers and on the radio. The Gardens have been helpful and will work with us on publicizing our activities.

Please contact Dennis if you’d consider working on this.

Treasurer’s Report Ben Nicholson, our Treasurer

reports the following for Nov. and Dec. November 2016

Beginning balance: $10,025.84 Ending balance: $9,655.61 (In November our Chapter donated

$100.00 to both the Mendocino Coast B o t a n i c a l G a r d e n s a n d t h e Rhododendron Species Botanical Gardens as an annual donation.)

December 2016 Beginning balance $9,665.61 Ending balance $9,062.35

Ben is very active at the MCBG and he reminds us that the Gardens have been very supportive of our endeavor to put on our Show and Sale at the Gardens. We, as individuals can support them just as our Chapter has. Currently they are having their annual appeal for support. They’ll gladly accept a donation if you’d like to make one. In Memory

Another Fun Noyo Chapter Year We’ve finished another year. This year we gained some new friends. Sadly, we lost some of our long-

time friends. We learned about caring for rhododendrons. At our annual Show we sold some plants, showed some beautiful flowers, won some ribbons, and had a good time. We met the new director at the Gardens. We learned about our native rhododendrons, the eastern azaleas, the tropical vireayas and waterfalls in Venezuela.

Mostly, we had fun enjoying each other. For most of us this is what makes the Noyo Chapter so special.
