iTero – Parallel Confocal Imaging

• Cadent iTero features parallel confocal imaging, not conventional triangulation which utilizes laser and optical scanning to digitally capture the surface and contours of the tooth and gum structure.

• The iTero scanner captures 100,000 points of laser light in perfect focus at 300 focal depths of the tooth structure. These focal depth images are spaced approximately 50 microns apart.

Only iTero is 100% Powder Free Scanning

• iTero is the ONLY Intra-Oral Scanning System that does not require powdering for any type of scanning, on any type of restoration

• Powdering, Accent Frosting, Dusting….it’s all the same messy, expensive, time consuming procedure

• Lava COS, E4D, and Cerec all require some type of powdering procedure depending on the system an type of restoration

Example – Powdering with the Sirona Cerec System

Tooth Coating with Triangulation/ Sampling

• Triangulation/sampling scanners require the teeth to be coated with titanium oxyde to avoid light scattering.

• Hard to get to the undercuts with this technology

Type of file obtained

• When you scan with Itero or a dental cast scanner , you get an STL file

• STL means stereolithographic file.

• STL are widely used for:- rapid prototyping

- computer-aided manufacturing. (CAD-CAM)

- STL files describe only the surface geometry of a three dimensional object without any representation of color, texture or other common CAD model attributes. (wikipedia)

Conclusions

• 3D technology is advancing very rapidly in Oorthodontics

• Started in 1992 and is now almost mainstream

• Possibilities of CAD CAM impressions and appliances fabrications are just starting to emerge but will expand rapidly in the future.

• Far from perfect but getting much better everyday.
