Issue Five

November 2015

On Wednesday 16th September, some Brazilian visitors came in to see what schools are like in England. They went round every class to see what they were doing and they watched the Year 6 class make ginger breadmen.

To welcome the visitors into the school, we did an assembly and sang lots of songs. Not only did we sing songs, but we asked them a few questions and told them a bit about our school. When the Brazilians left, the Year 2 class did a display. There were poems, pictures and lots of lovely art work. But we didn’t just leave them to go back to Brazil and forget them. Our school has links with different schools in Brazil so we can keep in touch.

Miss Peel and Miss Beuster are going to go to Brazil to see what the schools are like. So that was our visit with the Brazilians.

On Wednesday the 16th September, Aycliffe Village Primary School were honoured to have some very special visitors all the way from Brazil. The children preformed an outstanding assembly for our visitors, some children were even lucky enough to ask the Brazilian visitors about school life in Brazil. Every year group above the Reception Class, had two children to read out their question. The children selected had the best questions to ask and they were fabulous! We also sang a series of songs throughout the classes. The songs included were amazing, such as, ‘Autumn Days’ sung by Year 6, ‘Big Red Combine Harvester’, sung by all of Key Stage 1, ‘Doe a Deer’ sung by Year 3 and many more! We would like to say an enormous thank you to our visitors for coming into our school and telling us more about education in Brazil.

We have been awarded the International School Award again for our work in developing international links and global citizenship.

Over the last two terms, our teachers have been developing links with A n g e l i n a L i a Rolfsen School in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Pupils have sent work to the pupils of the school, depicting life here at Aycliffe Village.

We have also received work from the Brazilian children showing life in Sao Paulo.

With the Olympics just a year away, this is an exciting time for the school to be developing these links with the Brazilian pupils. The staff have seen from other programmes in the past how much the pupils get from such collaboration.

In addition to the Brazilian partnership, links have also been established with a school near Amien in France.

Fencing LessonOn Wednesday 9th September, Year 5and 6 pupils did fencing. We did it with a fencing coach. At first we got told how to put the clothes on. The first thing we put on was a half jacket, then we put on a backwards jacket. Next we put a helmet on so the sword didn’t go in our faces. It was a plastic sword though!

In fencing there are three ways to move, forward, backwards and lunge. To move forward you lift your front foot up, put it down then bring your back foot forward. To more backwards you bring your back foot back, lift your front foot up then put it down. To lunge you put your front foot forward, then bend your leg and straighten your arm.

On the 18th of September, Years Five and Six went on a school trip to Beamish Museum. We went to Beamish to see how Victorians enjoyed a day out at an Agricultural Show. The show took place on the exhibition field. Some people took part in competitions.

Firstly, we all walked round to the town. As we walked we saw a lot of fun things like an old tractor. The tractor looked very old and rusty - it looked as if it had been there for decades. When we got to the town, Year Six went to the lovely smelling bakery. In the fresh smelling bakery we saw how the bread is mixed in a big machine. Then we bought our biscuits, some people got ginger bread, some got coconut biscuits and some got strawberry shortbread.

Meanwhile, Year Five went to the heavenly, mouth-watering sweet shop. In the shop we bought our sweets. After a while Year Six came back so we went into the room where the sweets are made. We were lucky enough to get a taste of freshly made Cinder Toffee.

Soon after, we got back together with Year Six and we took a quick walk down to the band hall. In there we had our din-ner. There was a huge painting at the back of the hall of a saint. For dinner we had a sandwich, a yogurt, a piece of fruit, a flapjack and a fresh bottle of water.

When we had finished our lunch we got a ride on the old fashioned bus all the way to the exhibition field were we went into the tea tent. There we had a cup of lemonade and a slice of cake.

Then we went over to the scarecrow making. When we had chosen our groups of six or seven, we started to make our scarecrow. It was quite easy to make our scarecrows - all you had to do was tie two sticks together with some string then we added some clothes stuffed with straw. We all went crazy with the straw! This activity was followed by some folk dancing. First we warmed up by doing skipping around in a circle doing funny actions, crazily! Then Year Six started their dance. In the dancing there was a lot of skipping and clapping. It was so funny because we were all out of breath.

Then we went to see the strong men. There were two of them. They lifted a boulder, a dumb-bell and a log with hand holes in it. We don’t think the strong men liked lifting the dumb-bell because they started complaining!

Finally, it was time to end the day by having an award ceremony. Year 5 and Year 6 were lined up around the edge of the arena waiting for our school name to be called so we could go and collect our awards.

Overall we had a great day – the Victorian Agricultural Show was great fun!

IntroductionSonic the Hedgehog 2 is the sequel to the best selling game on the SEGA MEGADRIVE, Sonic the Hedgehog. It was released in 1992 the day was called ‘sonic2uesday.’

StoryThe story of Sonic 2 is very simple the evil Dr.Evo. Robotnik is back to his old ways. He has captured the creatures on South Island and is tuning them into robots. Everything looks normal but he has been secretly building a flying spaceship called the Death Egg.

CharactersSonic the HedgehogSonic is our main character

and will do anything to free the animals and save the planet from destruction. Sonic is addicted to action. He gets cocky and arrogant if he is stopped.

Miles (Tails) ProwerMiles is a two tailed fox who can fly by spinning his tails like a propeller on a helicop-ter or use them like jet engines to keep up with sonic. Tails also has a biplane called ‘The Tornado 2. The only problem is there is only one seat so Sonic has to stand on the wing.

Year 6 Gardening Club

In gardening, we do weeding, planting and digging for potatoes. I like gardening because you take care of the plant and you can take vegetables home for our plants to use in cooking at home. I also like gardening because you can help Mr Leadbitter and Mr Gargan do all of the plants and weeding.By Malana Cutler
