U3 Geography fieldtrip: The Isle of Wight Adventure

19th – 22nd June 2015

AIMS:-To study geography in a unique environment.

-To provide a residential experience for Junior school pupils.

-To enable the pupils to try out new exciting activities that will challenge them.

-To help foster friendship and independence.

The Isle of Wight Adventure: Where and why?

Why?1. Great geography- Centre location close to range

of easy to study places such as rural settlements, coasts, tourism.

- Expert study staff with good local knowledge. PGL Little Canada is a known study centre, great for KS3 pupils.

2. Great activities- PGL reputation for safe and

exciting activities. All activities onsite in safe accessible locations.

3. Practical reasons- 80 children, 11 and 12 years

old. Need accommodation, food, activities in 1 location.

- Need reputable company for academic and safety record, etc.

- FSC and PGL best companies- limited locations and availability.

- PGL willing to provide all transport, and an all inclusive, safe trip.

Friday 19th June: Meet at school 07:30.

Monday 22nd June: Pick up 17:00 from school.

COASTAL MANAGEMENT How can we manage our coastlines to reduce the impacts of future climate change and extreme weather? Visit to Ventnor.

RURAL SETTLEMENT: What is a rural settlement like, and what issues does it face in the 21st Century? Visit to Wootton

TOURISM STUDY: How has tourism impacted on Sandown, and is it sustainable?Visit to Sandown

Questions....

Why would we like the students to go? Academically worth doing, during school time, etc.

How are we getting there? Coach from school, then ferry to Isle of Wight.

Will the cost increase? No, but may want pocket money.

What if an accident happens/ my child gets ill? Fully qualified first aiders on staff and at centre. Accompanied home if needs be (insurance).

Which staff are going? Mr Bustin, Mrs Pennington, Miss Hill, Mr Belcher, Rev. Prior, Dr Lister…

Will medical/ dietary needs be met? Yes- let us know on form.

Kit list? Will be sent out nearer the time- no valuables/ phones etc.

Do we need specialist kit? No- all specialist kit available to hire from centre. Full waterproofs, clothes and shoes happy to get wet would be useful.

Will it benefit their geography? Undoubtedly!

Can the children phone home? Payphone at the centre. No mobile phones allowed but staff will have emergency phones.

Can I see risk assessments? Yes, some available on PGL website. My job to collate and present to SLT at school.

Will there be free time? Yes, supervised at centre in student rooms and outside area.

What about insurance? School insurance, PGL insurance (online), own if you wish.

Will we be the only school group at the centre? No, lots of other children on site.
