Web 2.0 “word cloud”…

Web 2.0 tools should meet at least two of the following conditions:

• Allow people to communicate, collaborate, and build community online

• Can be syndicated, shared, reused, or remixed….or facilitate syndication

• Lets people learn easily from and capitalize on the behaviour or knowledge of others

(Farkas, 2007)

Web 2.0 – why is it important?

• Content, not structure, is the key

• Ease of use – everyone can participate (& contribute!)

• Trust, openness and sharing is vital

• Focus on continuous development & improvement

• New emphasis on collective intelligence

Web 2.0 tools: important characteristics

The Web as a platform –

Applications can be delivered (and used) through a web browser

(online productivity tools: word processors & spreadsheets i.e., GoogleDocs)

Tools designed to encourage and support users in contributing to them

IS 20090 Course Details

• Lectures are on Wednesdays from 4 – 6pm in D114, Health Sciences Centre

• (most) 2-hour classes will include a practical component

• Virtual Worlds lecture (21st October) will take place in the Health Sciences Library Information Skills Room

• Final lecture (25th November) will consist of a final exam (includes an MCQ and essay)

• Blog creation & upkeep (assessed twice during the semester (end of Week 6 & 10)) 30%
