Each table will receive a mystery bag. Try to see this item as a poet would see it, “in a fresh new way”
Each table will have 3 minutes(ish) to do the following (2nd graders would get about 10 minutes, and fewer objects). Observe (looks like, sounds like, feels like) Discuss with partner WRITE (lists, phrases, sentences, poems . . .)
EXTENDED PRACTICE
?
Scientist’s Notes on a Leaf Poet’s Notes on a Leaf
One inch long, three inches wide Tiny enough to be a tree for a village of snails
Sawtooth edge It’s as if someone scissored the edges to make them pretty
Dark green on one side Painted a deep forest green
Veins stick out
SCIENTISTS NOTES VS. POET’S NOTES
About 10 minutes
add more ideas to create a poem you would want to share with a partner
Draw illustrations, sometimes illustrations can give us more to write about
Reason: This is another opportunity for me to conference with students and ask them about their writing
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
SHARING
1. Mini lesson Goal: I can see the world like a poet.
2. Guided Practice/Extended Practice
3. Independent Practice/Conference
4. Sharing/Closure
