INTRODUCTION TO POETRY

WHAT IS POETRY???

• POETRY IS AN IMAGINITIVE AWARENESS OF EXPERIENCE EXPRESSED THROUGH MEANING, SOUND, RYHTMIC LANGUAGE CHOICES SO AS TO EVOKE AN EMOTIONAL RESPONSE TO THE READER.

THE ELEMENTS OF POETRY…

• THE ELEMENTS OF POETRY CAN BE DEFINED AS A SET OF INSTRUMENTS USED TO CREATE A POEM AND HAVE BEEN LINKED TO ANCIENT STORY TELLING.

• THEY HELP BRING IMAGERY AND EMOTION TO POETRY, STORIES, AND DRAMAS.

STANZA• A UNIT OF LINES GROUPED TOGETHER.

• SIMILAR TO A PARAGRAPH IN A STORY OR COMPREHENSION TEXT.

• CONSITS OF TWO OR MORE LINES OOF POETRY THAT TOGETHER FORM ONE OF THE DIVISIONS OF POETRY.

TONE/MOOD…•THE ATTITUDE THE POET HAS TOWARDS HIS/HER SUBJECT.

IMAGERY…• IS THE REPRESENTATION OF THE FIVE

SENSES: SIGHT, TOUCH, SMELL, HEAR, AND TASTE.

• CREATES MENTAL PICTURES/IMAGES ABOUT A POEM’S SUBJECT.

VISUAL IMAGERY…

•Descriptions that one can almost “picture” or visualize in one’s head while reading a poem.

AUDITORY IMAGERY…

•Descriptions of sound that the reader can almost “hear” while reading a poem.

OLFACTORY IMAGERY…

• This refers to the images of smell.

• Descriptions of smell seem to come alive and the reader can almost “smell” the image created in the poem while reading.

TACTILE OR “PHYSICAL” IMAGERY…

•Descriptions that convey a strong sense of touch or physical sensation that the reader can almost “feel” or “touch” while reading.
