Objectives

• To introduce about Jhwo bhoye or Lapte bhoye - one important aspect of rich newari culture

• To introduce the sequence of variety of dishes in lapte bhoye

How it starts ?

• Bhoye is feasted while sitting down in a long line on a hand woven paddy straw mat (sukul) on the floor. 

• Guests are seated according to the family hierarchy, such as the father followed by his eldest son and so forth from the right hand side.

Let’s begin the bhoye...

• Bhoye starts by laying a leaf plate, called Lapte, in front of each seated guest by servers who are known as Bhalin.

Items served in bhoye

1. Baji (Chiura or beaten rice) – served twice as a sign of good luck so that guest can have more than enough food

2. Aaloo Achar (potato pickle)

3. Dayakugu Laa (Buffalo meat curry) After serving this, guests may begin to eat.

4. Boo Bo (Beans curry)

Simpu (Simi or white beans)

Kegu (Kerau or yellow peas)

Bhatmas

5. Kauli (cauliflower)seasonal vegetable curry

6. Aaloo Chwon (Aaloo Tama or potatoes and bamboo shoots)

7. Khashi ya Laa (Mutton curry) or Kha ya Laa (chicken curry)Actually not cultural norm in a typical Bhoye, but serving these meats signifies the higher social and financial status of the host.

8. Puk Laa (Bhuton)fried internal organs of buffalo

After this, Bhalin do second serving of dishes, which 

may continue again. 

9. Ayela (rice wine)– Ladies of host family pour

Ayela slowly starting close at Salicha (Small earthen bowl) and gradually lifting up to the waist level to aerate the wine.

10.Wauncha (green leafy vegetable)spinach or mustard leaves.

15.Sisa fusa (diced vegetable salad)diced carrots, radishes, cucumbers, soaked small green peas, peeled pieces of oranges or any other seasonal fruits and vegetables.

• After the serving of Sisabusa, the Newah Bhoye officially completes.

• Wait until elder member stands up – sign of a respect towards the elders.
