Transcript of Introduction to FOSS
- 1. Introduction To FOSS
- 2. Freesoftware" is amatterof liberty, notprice. To
understandtheconcept, youshouldthinkof "free" as in"freespeech,"
notas in"freebeer" - Richard Stallman (FSF) What is FOSS??
- 3. Evolution of FOSS Stallman launched the GNU Project in
September 1983 to create a Unix-like computer operating system
composed entirely of free software. Printer problem. Program to
send error message New Xerox Printer donated. Same problems Xerox
refuses to give source code RMS decides to fight for Software
Freedom
- 4. Linus Torvalds - Creator of LINUX
- 5. Background of FOSS
- 6. The Four Freedoms Use for any purpose(run a program). Study
the program(Access to the source code). Redistribute copies(to help
others). Improve the program and redistribute it.
- 7. The stride towards Freedom 1984 : Richard Stallman kicks off
the GNU project. 1985 : Richard Stallman starts Free Software
Foundation. 1989 : Release of GNU (GNU's Not Unix!). 1989 : Release
of GNU GPL Version 1. 1991 : Linus Torvalds announces the release
of Linux Kernel.
- 8. Benefits of FOSS Security Economy and affordability No
license and maintenance fees for software's.
Reliability/Stability(No crashes of System). No viruses.
Adaptability Can be modified to suit a particularly locality.
- 9. Piracy. User freedoms Freedom to use, study, modify and
distribute a particular software (through the GPL and open source
licenses). NO Slow Down of System. o
- 10. HOW BIG IS FOSS?????? How many projects? - Certainly in
100s of thousands. - Over 400,000 projects registered on one site
alone (sourceforge.net). - Similar number of developers? How many
users? - Depends on what you call a 'user' ! - Certainly many
millions.
- 11. Some FOSS Equivalents to Proprietary Software's
- 12. Can FOSS be combined with proprietary software? -Combining
FOSS with proprietary software is possible, depending on the manner
of combination and on the specific license of the software. -An
example of this is running an Oracle database on a GNU/Linux
operating system.
- 13. Popular Linux Distros Fedora Core: Stable, secure, user
friendly, easy to install. Frequent full releases. Ubuntu Linux:
The growing community distribution. Debian based but stable
releases every 6 months. User friendly. Great for beginners.
Debian: Very stable and safe, but more difficult to configure and
install. Developer but no user friendly yet. Stable releases not
frequent enough (every 2 or 3 years). Great for servers, but not
for beginners! Mandriva Community :Easy to install, secure, user
friendly, frequent full releases, but less stable (not enough
testing and taking user feedback into account).
- 14. Ubuntu OS Meaning of the word Ubuntu : Ubuntu is an ancient
African word meaning 'humanity to others' Ubuntu Linux is a
computer operating system based on the Debian GNU/Linux
distribution. It is distributed as Free and open source software.
Ubuntu is designed primarily for desktop use, although netbook and
server editions exist as well.
- 15. Why Ubuntu Easy to learn, specially for beginners. Secure
Works well even with a downgraded hardware. Your PC would never
slow down. Try before you buy option. Pre-installed applications
for personal use.
- 16. Ubuntu Vs Windows Features Ubuntu Windows Cost Absolutely
Free Costs in Thousands Support Long term support, ubuntu forums,
at a minimal price Support provided but cost you much. Security
high Lower Apps Pre-installed apps, Software Center Comes with
nothing, Minimum Requirements 512mb RAM 700mhz processor about 7gb
HDD space 1gb RAM at least 1ghz processor 20 gb HDD space.
- 17. Apps to look for
- 18. Libre Office
- 19. VLC RhythmBox
- 20. GIMP
- 21. How is Ubuntu funded ? Ubuntu is sponsored by the UK-based
company Canonical Ltd., owned by South African entrepreneur Mark
Shuttleworth. Canonical generates revenue by selling technical
support and services tied to Ubuntu, while the operating system
itself is entirely free of charge.
- 22. Ubuntu releases The first one was Warty warthog (4.10). The
College uses version 12.04 LTS, Precise Pangolin. The latest is the
14.04 Trusty Tahr.
