Thailand Beaches
Essential Thailand
ITINERaRy... Days 1-2 Bangkok Fast-paced and fascinating,
Bangkok’s chaotic streets are a traveller’s delight. Head out to Wat
Arun, the ‘Temple of the Dawn’, to see its ornate Khmer-style tower.
Take the overnight train to Surat Thani. For trips May-Oct (East
Coast)... Days 3-4 Ko Pha-Ngan Chilled out and picturesque,
this island getaway is the perfect place to escape for an idyllic
beach break. Wander through fishing villages, discover temples or
swim under refreshing waterfalls. Days 5-6 Ko Tao Soak up the
best of beach life on the white, sandy shores of Ko Tao. Snorkel or
scuba along reefs teeming with colourful fish, or relax on the beach
under swaying coconut palms. Days 7-9 Ko Samui Get ready for
more white beaches, ancient temples and cooling waterfalls - but
this time with the addition of a lively nightlife. Take a day trip to
Thailand's largest national marine park, home to the beautiful
Emerald Lake. There's the option to get active and head out on a
sea-canoeing trip or, if that seems like too much hard work, simply
relax with a cocktail on the beach. For trips Nov-apr (West
Coast)... Days 3-4 ao Nang/Krabi Soak up the sun on the
beautiful beaches of Krabi before taking a snorkelling day trip to Phi
Phi Island. Days 5-6 Ko yao Noi Sail around the bay’s spectacular
limestone cliffs and islands before pulling on a mask for more
fantastic snorkelling. Days 7-9 Phuket Take a refreshing dip in a
waterfall en route to Phuket’s Gibbon Rehabilitation Centre. There
is so much to see and do on Thailand’s largest island. Bungee jump,
take in a cabaret show or simply kick back with a cocktail.
ITINERaRy... Days 1-2 Bangkok Get acquainted with Thailand’s
steamy capital on an introductory walking tour. In free time,
amble through the Grand Palace, admire the enormous gilded
Buddha at Wat Pho or graze your way through the day at the
many street food stalls. A ride in a tuk-tuk is a quintessentially Thai
experience so make sure to flag one down to get around town.
Day 3 Chiang Mai Thailand’s beloved northern capital is filled
with enough peaceful temples, exotic markets and delicious food
options to keep everyone happy. Perhaps book into a cooking
class to learn the secrets of Thai cuisine, temple-hop within the
city’s moat boundaries or catch the sunset from Doi Suthep. The
Chiang Mai Night Bazaar is a must, but be sure to bargain hard.
The town also has a thriving bar scene, so perhaps end a great
day with a tasty Thai beer. Days 4-6 hilltribe Trek Trekking
Thailand’s rugged hills is the absolute highlight of any northern
adventure. The hilltribes that live here each have their own unique
language, traditions and dress. Hike between lush rice paddies and
along small tracks to remote village homestays for a taste of the
hospitality these tribes are famous for. Sleep in huts, mingle with
the tribespeople and get a sense of life in this remote corner of the
world. Day 7 Chiang Mai There’s time for a final spot of shopping
or a relaxing Thai massage before boarding the train back to the
capital. Day 8 Bangkok The adventure comes full circle back
in steamy Bangkok. Why not stay a bit longer? Floating markets,
Chinatown, temples and street stalls - this city has it all.

early and swap the chaotic energy of Bangkok for the tranquil
grounds of Bang Pa-In, a summer palace on the banks of the

manicured gardens. In the afternoon visit World Heritage-listed
Ayuthaya, one of the ancient capitals of Siam. Enjoy a guided

Burma-Thailand Death Railway. Leave the river behind and journey
into the Erawan National Park, famous for its spectacular, cascading

Borneo Photography
ITINERaRy... Day 1 Kota Kinabalu/Gaya Island The turquoise
waters and white, sandy beaches of Gaya Island are just a short
ferry trip from Kota Kinabalu. Gaya Island is the biggest of the five
islands that make up the national marine park of Tunku Abdul
Rahman. Once on the island, there’s time to swim, snorkel or stroll
through the sun-dappled jungles in search of macaques, monitor
lizards and hornbills. Days 2-3 Gayana Eco Resort Situated on
a reef and fringed by lush rainforest, the comfortable resort is the
perfect place to chill out. Stay in a chalet that is built out over the
water, perched high on timber stilts. Sit back on the balcony with
a cool drink while watching colourful, tropical fish swim in the
sparkling sea beneath. Life does not get more relaxing than this!
Once sufficient time has been spent soaking up the ambience
from the chalet, why not head out to try something more active?
Consider a splash in the resort’s saltwater pool, learn to scuba dive
or tackle the challenging six km jungle trail to nearby Malahom
Beach. With unlimited use of canoes, kayaks and pedal boats,
there’ll be no excuse to not get out and explore this tropical
paradise from the water. Perhaps travel further afield and discover
the other four unspoilt islands that make up the stunning Tunku
Abdul Rahman National Park. Day 4 Kota Kinabalu Cruise back
over blue waters to Sabah’s charming capital, Kota Kinabalu. If
time permits, stay on to explore some of its sights. Haggle for a
bargain in its markets, check out the ceramics collection at the State
Museum or pick up last-minute souvenirs at the Handicraft Centre.
ITINERaRy... Day 1 Kota Kinabalu/Danum Valley Discover
Borneo through the lens on a captivating adventure in the
company of award-winning wildlife photographer, Nick Garbutt.
An expert on Borneo, Nick knows the best places for wildlife
photography. Fly from Kota Kinabalu to Lahad Datu and transfer to
a rainforest lodge in the Danum Valley. Days 2-6 Danum Valley
Conservation area Spend time out and about capturing great
wildlife shots, under the expert tuition of Nick, in the Danum Valley
Conservation Area. This pristine lowland rainforest is arguably
Borneo’s premier wildlife location. Head out on walking trails and
be amazed by the forest’s amazing biodiversity. Keep eyes peeled
- and cameras ready - for orangutans, red-leaf monkeys, Bornean
gibbons and an incredible array of exotic birdlife. For a different
perspective, take to the canopy walkway and capture the forest
from above. When night falls, head out to get a glimpse into the
secretive world of the park’s nocturnal creatures. Maybe see giant
flying squirrels, colugo or even a slow loris or western tarsier. Frogs
are also common and the resonant honk of the Bornean horned
frog is often heard, although tracking one down can be hard.
Back at the lodge, spend time learning how to edit, process and
catalogue images using photo editing software. Day 7 Danum
Valley/Kota Kinabalu After six days spent honing photography
skills in the lush depths of the Borneo jungle it’s time to head back
to Lahad Datu for a flight back to Sabah’s steamy capital where this
once-in-a-lifetime experience finishes on arrival.

artisans selling handicrafts, wood carvings and metalwork. Arrive
early to browse their wares, explore nearby villages or see the
surrounding countryside by bicycle. Perhaps visit the eccentric
Blanco Renaissance Museum or investigate the lively Ubud
restaurant scene. Day 2-3 Tetebatu Stock up on snacks from food
hawkers on the ferry ride to Lombok. Catch a bemo to the peaceful
hill retreat of Tetebatu, famed for its great views of Mt Rinjani. Take
a guided walk through verdant rice fields and see how the farmers
of this region have farmed for centuries, still using traditional water
buffalo ploughs. Continue on through rainforest and perhaps be
lucky enough to see some of the resident, but very shy, ebony
leaf monkeys, known locally as Lutung. Visit the local village of
Pringgasela, learn about traditional weaving and enjoy a delicious
Sasak feast. Day 4 Senaru Wake before dawn for great views of
sunrise over Mt Rinjani. After a short ride in cidomos (horse-drawn
carts) and a spot of shopping at the market, head to the village
of Limbungan. Here, gain culinary bragging rights by sampling
fried grasshopper. Spend the night in Senaru, nestled between Mt
Rinjani and the jungle. Days 5-6 Gili Islands Stretch those legs
