Great Lakes Equine is an exclusively equine veterinary clinic providing routine and emergency care for approximately 2,000 horses within a 150 mile radius. An 11,000 square foot clinic and hospital with surgical suite provide an exceptional atmosphere for more advance procedures and overnight medical cases. We are a progressive practice offering dentistry, sport horse medicine, lameness and performance evaluations, high-quality internal medicine, reproductive services, wellness care, and alternative medicine.
At GLE, our internship program allows you to learn one-on-one from our experienced doctors and technicians, get hands-on practical experience with our teaching horses, and eventually, practice on your own with mentors dedicated to your continuing education.

• 11,000 square foot clinic and hospital• 4 doctor practice• 10 large hospitalization stalls• Foaling stall• Technician monitoring station• Video camera monitoring• Surgical suite• Two 18' x 20' examination rooms• 48' x 48' lameness arena• Fully equipped laboratory• 4 outdoor paddocks
Our goal is to assist new veterinary graduates to become excellent equine practitioners.
If you are interested in an organized, comprehensive internship with practical client interaction, attentive mentoring, case presentations, weekly doctor meet-ings, state-of-the-art equipment and much more, Great Lakes Equine is the internship for you.
Weekly hands-on training with teaching horses, including:• Ultrasound• Radiography• Lameness, including examination
and blocks• Podiatry, including hoof testing,
angles and trimming• Ophthalmology• Alternative medicine basics• Anesthesia• Clinical anatomy• Laboratory, in-house, routine
blood work, fecal analysis• Catheter placement• Bandaging • Reproduction• Gastroscopy / endoscopy• Pharmacology review, including
sedatives, antibiotics, steroids, feed supplements
Practical experience, including:• Dentistry• Routine immunizations• Bandaging• Physical exams • Colic workup and management• Lameness exams• Opthalmology• Radiography• Regenerative medicine• Euthanasia, when necessary• Laceration repair• Dystocia and other reproductive
emergencies
Business topics, such as:• Practice ownership basics• Pharmacy and inventory• How to secure an equine position• Practice ethics
After the first 6 months, intern will accept primary case responsibility for routine daytime appointments, as well as, after-hour emergencies. Intern is provided use of their own ambulatory vehicle.
Great Lakes Equine offers 2-week externships for 4th year students.

Our goal is to provide all externs with a positive experience and an open learning environment. Our externs are then encouraged to apply for our internsip.
