Likely to have been collected during second voyage (1772-1775) and taken to England. Thought to have been given by Joseph Banks to William Bullock. Purchased at the sale of Bullock’s Museum in 1819 by Charles Winn and donated by his grandson, Lord St Oswald, to the New Zealand government in 1912.

In 1955, it was gifted to the Dominion Museum (Te Papa's predecessor) as part of an important collection of artefacts from the Imperial Institute.

Collected by Sir Joseph Banks on Cook’s first voyage to New Zealand in 1769. It is most likely from the Cook Strait area. Bequeathed by Banks to Robert Brown in 1820; in 1827 transferred by Brown to the British Museum. Later became part of Kenneth A. Webster's collection, most of which was purchased by the New Zealand Government for the National Museum in 1958.
