KNOW YOUR CEO
Dr.-Ing. Ralf-Michael Fuchs, born in 1958, has since 01.02.2010 been the CEO of Carl
Schenck AG. He spent two years in military service, studied industrial engineering and
business administration at the University (TH) Karlsruhe and worked from 1984 at the
Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA) in Stuttgart.
During this time he completed his doctorate at the University of Stuttgart and received
for his research the annual prize of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.
From 1990 onwards he worked in various management positions at IWKA AG and
was responsible for the organizational build-up of the BMW business in Russia, before
moving in 1996 to AGIV AG, Frankfurt, the former owner of Carl SCHENCK AG. He took
over the management of the subsidiary Hottinger Baldwin Messtechnik GmbH (HBM),
Darmstadt in 1997. In December 2000, Dr. Fuchs joined the management of the Schenck RoTec GmbH,
Darmstadt, and in 2002 took over the chairmanship of the business unit balancing
and diagnostic systems (BDS) within the Dürr Group. In 2008 the scope of the
business unit was extended with DAP and DSC products to the new Business Unit
Balancing and Assembly products (BAP). From November 2010 he also took over the
management of the Dürr Measuring and Process Systems division which includes
DÜRR Ecoclean.
Last year Dr. Fuchs celebrated the Silver Jubilee of his marital life with Mrs. Carmen
Fuchs, who is since 25 years acting as a Judge in Germany.
Dr. Fuchs took a few moments off from his busy schedule this month to talk in detail
about Schenck Rotec, future course of action, major policy decisions and himself, with
Udayan Chandra Roy. Here are some excerpts from this Interview.
“The problem is never how to get new, innovative thoughts into your mind,
but how to get the old ones out.” - Dee Hock
How do you compare the professional life in Schenck with other
experiences?
Schenck is truly a global company and people within SCHENCK build an
international family. Being a head of five world market leaders like SCHENCK
Rotec, DÜRR Assembly Products, DÜRR Somac, Agramkow and DÜRR
Ecoclean is a very special task and exciting responsibility.
Where do you find Schenck in the emerging global business scenario?
Schenck has 45% of its sales and the same percent of employees in Asia. That keeps us in the
front seat as far as emerging ‘Global business scenario’ is concerned. In mature economies of
Europe and America there is less growth but always the scope of replacement, modernization
and upgrade business. We feel quite positive in both surroundings.
How do you view the current Politico-Economic scenario of developed world and it’s impact
on business?
Political events have an impact on business always for a short period only. SCHENCK even
survived two world wars. Overall there is quantitative growth through increasing population
and this drives economic development in a positive manner. With our 3.000 employees
worldwide and an annual turnover of around 600 million euro and our innovative products we
are well positioned for the future.
What is your opinion on ‘social responsibilities’ of business and role of Schenck Rotec in it?
According to our major shareholder Mr Heinz DÜRR, a company should be a ‘Social event’, and
profit is not the only motive for its existence. We try to follow his guidance and as a result our
employees feel very often like “at home” in our company and stay with us for longer periods.
E.g., the average stay of employees in Darmstadt with the company is around 23 years and a
significant number of people have their 25, 40 or even 50 year anniversaries with the company
– every year ! And in our company in India there are also employees serving more than 20
years.
“To be successful, you have to have your heart in your business, and your business in your heart.” - Thomas Watson Sr.
What are your expectations from Schenck India and please
share if you have any future vision?
The Indian economy will further grow with more
mechanized forms of transport and better roads, expansion
of power generation and supply and keeping vegetables and
food “cool” while stored and transported. In all this
segments our products will be used.
So it is our expectation that Schenck India will stay the
number 1 in the Indian market in all our business segments .
Having been in India for 26 years now, we have a big advantage over foreign competitors: with sales
and service offices we are well spread out all over the country and in addition we have a local
production in Noida. On the other hand: the good footprint in India and the international cooperation
with our SCHENCK and DÜRR sister companies in other parts of the world makes it difficult for local
Indian companies to compete with us.
Dr. Fuchs, we would love to know about your hobbies and interests.
My work leaves me with little time for hobbies, but I enjoy travelling, ‘soft’ mountaineering on Alps
and cycling next to river Maine in Frankfurt. In my youth I used to play water polo, the piano and the
accordion, and presently I love listening to both ‘hard rock and ‘Classical’.
Sir, we would like to hear from you about some positive things about India.
I have just one term borrowed from Indian tourism advertisement in Germany: ‘INCREDIBLE INDIA’!
This explains in a nutshell the vast and remarkable diversity, variety and range of this nation. Managing
such extremes of variances makes government and business a formidable task. And beside my business
trips to India I also spent some holidays together with my wife in Agra, Jaipur and Dehli and this was
really a beautiful experience.
What are your views on role of women in corporate world? Does Schenck have any policy to increase
participation of women in future ventures?
In our company there is no room for any discrimination of male or female persons. We do not prefer
people according to their sex, religion, nation or colour. It is qualification, personality and ambition
which matters.
Finally, what is your message to the employees of Schenck?
Employees should have faith and trust in their own abilities and also in the strength of our
organization.
Thank you very much for taking out time and we wish you well.

SRIL DAY
The annual day, aptly termed SRIL day is a much
awaited and looked forward to event, for every
employee of the company. The barriers of
designation, department and creed dissolve as all
the employees, including those from area offices,
come enjoy games, sports, food and some
entertainment.
This year the program kicked-off with a sumptuous
breakfast followed by men’s race. Next in line was
men’s long-jump that had the young, not-so-young
and oldies jostling for the top honors, providing
some really wholesome entertainment apart from
some exciting moments.
Then was the turn of the crème-de-la-crème i.e., Volleyball which had the crowd
clapping and screaming for their ‘favorite’ teams. This event proved all the more
exciting, as the MD Mr. Khanna also joined in to ‘toss’, ‘block‘, ‘set’ and ‘spike’ the ball
in a couple of matches.
The men’s shot-put was next where for a change, a plenty of ‘brawn’ was at display.
The sporting events rounded-off with Kho-kho and spoon race, exclusively for ladies.
After a fabulous lunch, the entire SRIL team sat patiently to test their luck in the game
of housie, that had them getting edgy and nervy, while enjoying all the thrill
associated with this game.
After the prize distribution ceremony, the MD gave the concluding speech that
brought the curtains down on a highly entertaining and relieving program.
“It's not the strongest of species who survive, nor the most
intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.”
- Charles Darwin
A TRIBUTE TO LATE AJAY VISHWAKARMAA
The information that pierced the afternoon chaos with no care of the bitter
pill that could be swallowed without questioning. This was the fateful day on
which destiny deprived us of his physical presence but the memory still floats.
In order to commemorate him I feel to pen down few words……….
I quite well remember my first meeting with him at SCHENCK that was
summer of probably '11...and we r still walking! As a good friends we stayed
somewhat together...shared our teenage secrets, sometimes split for a while
over trivial incidents...had our own share of mutual emotional doldrums (and
that was heavy duty indeed...but for sure I admired him a lot...With all drama
that our friendship and the eccentric trajectories of our destiny had to
offer..there was faith and hope and wishes... and today with wisdom of age...
and lot of gravity in him.
..........He stays deep in my heart...as a friend I would treasure with all my efforts.
He epitomized the most efficient neuronal circuitry blended with unparalleled diligence (I remember him working
diligently to utmost limit caring nothing for the case to lose....)...and humility...with a puerile pristine heart...that
still can boast of unalloyed innocence, deep-rooted values, simple living with high thinking...a character so easy to
describe but immensely hard "to be"...
I still remember the days when we used to go for a complete package of the movie to be watched as if we had no
dearth of the time. Sometimes we would think how to engulf the time with undue compromising….
Now all of these have turned into dream ….
With these words in mind I pray to almighty to give peace to his soul………

Ajay Kr.
