Agenda

Implementering af Windows 8 in real life

• Windows 8 OS Deployment• Windows 8 OS Deployment features of ConfigMgr 2012 SP1• Take a look at what’s coming with OS Deployment in ConfigMgr

2012 R2

Level Setting

• This is not “What’s new in Windows 8”• Although we will talk about some new features and tools

• We will focus on changes in a few areas:• Deployment tools• New features and scenarios enabled by Windows 8

Windows 8 Deployment ToolsADK is the new Windows AIK

• All core Windows 8 deployment tools are now part of the “Assessment and Deployment Kit” (ADK)

• Everyone is able to download the ADK from the Download Center

• Cannot (should not) coexist with Windows AIK• Can only be installed on Windows 7, Windows

Server 2008 R2, and later OSes

Windows 8 Deployment ToolsWindows AIK vs. ADK

Windows AIK

• Windows PE 3.x• USMT 4.0• Windows System Image

Manager• DISM• ImageX

ADK

• Windows PE 4.0• USMT 5.0• Windows System Image

Manager• DISM• ImageX• Application Compatibility Toolkit

6.0• Volume Activation Management

Tool• Windows Performance Toolkit• Windows Assessment Toolkit

Windows 8 Deployment ToolsWhat’s new in Windows PE 4.0

• New “feature packs”:• .NET Framework 4• PowerShell 3.0• PowerShell cmdlets for

storage, iSCSI, DISM

• Offline BitLocker enablement

Windows 8 Deployment ToolsWhat’s new in USMT 5.0

• Support for Windows 8• Continued support for Windows XP as a source• You might need multiple versions:

Windows XP Windows Vista Windows 7 Windows 8

Windows XP USMT 3 USMT 4 USMT 4, 5 USMT 5

Windows Vista Not supported USMT 4 USMT 4, 5 USMT 5

Windows 7 Not supported Not supported USMT 4, 5 USMT 5

Windows 8 Not supported Not supported Not supported USMT 5

Windows 8 Deployment ToolsWhat’s new in DISM

New imaging features• Taking over from ImageX, which is depricated

Support for VHD and WIM filesPowerShell cmdlets for some operationsMetro application provisioning and installation

DemoNew Boot Image

Windows 8• Current observations:

• 15 minutes goes to 10 when using new Windows PE• Windows Vista takes over 30 minutes for a clean install (no integration components)

Windows 7

• Image size:• 1.97GB image (WIM), 7.87GB

expanded• Installation time (new):

• 15 minutes*• Upgrade time (from Vista):

• 30 minutes

Windows 8

• Image size:• 1.96GB image (WIM), 7.76GB

expanded• Installation time (new):

• 10 minutes• Upgrade time (from Windows 7):

• 20 minutes

Windows 8 FeaturesBitLocker Enhancements

• Pre-provisioning• Encrypt disk before the

operating system is installed

• Initiated from Windows PE 4.0

• Protectors get added once the OS is running

• Encrypt only used space• Automatic network unlock

on trusted wired networks• Standard users can reset

PINs

• Replacement for legacy BIOS• Results in faster boot times• Required for new Windows features• Requires a different disk configuration• Operating system architecture must

match device• Some systems may offer a

compatibility support module (CSM)

*While Windows Vista x64 SP2 allows for UEFI, we do not test and support deployments

• New task sequence variable _SMSTSBootUEFI

• New disk configuration required• GUID Partition Table (GPT) disk• FAT32 boot partition• Unformatted Microsoft reserved partition (MSR)• NTFS Operating System Partition

• No support moving from BIOS to UEFI during a task sequence

• Special considerations for PXE boot

Windows 8 FeaturesSecure Boot

• Layer of security on top of UEFI• UEFI verifies the boot loader• Can be configured to only

load verified files• Required for Windows 8

hardware certification• Yes, you can still boot other

OSes (with x86 and x64)• Turn off in the firmware for

OSes that don’t support it• Use newer OS distributions

that do

• Scenarios• Contractors• Bring Your Own Device• Travel Light• Shared PCs

• Create• Build a WTG image using

Configuration Manager

Windows To Go• Provision

• IT Pro can deploy Windows To Go to a users or machines

• End User can on demand provision Windows To Go with minimal downtime

• Manage• Updated and managed same

as a physical laptop or desktop• IT Pro can determine if device

is Windows To Go or not

DemoWindows To Go

• Windows 8 ADK replaced by Windows 8.1 ADK

• OS deployment just like Windows 8• Same support for OSD-specific site

system roles

What’s New in R2 OSD

• Externally customized• Windows 7 SP1 AIK• DISM• WinPE-SecureStartup• WinPE-WMI• WinPE-Scripting• WinPE-WDS-Tools• Drivers• (Step-by-step instructions to

• No in-console servicing

• Scenarios• Task sequence validation• Datacenter integration

• Create VHD• Hyper-V required with

ConfigMgr console• New task sequence template

• Modify VHD• Schedule updates (offline

servicing)• Add new applications

(rebuild)• Upload to VMM
