IMPACT OF WATER POLLUTION ON ANIMAL

HEALTH-

Guided by:-Dr.ManimaranScientist,LPM

Overview:- •Types of water pollution •Sources of water pollution •Causes of water pollution •Effect of water pollution •Conclusion

Water pollution is defined as the alteration of physical, chemical and biological characteristics of water resulting in harmful effects on life systems

Water pollution is a major global problem. It has been suggested that it is the leading worldwide cause of deaths and diseases, and that it accounts for the deaths of more than 14,000 people daily.

Water pollution accounts for 80% of all infectious diseases.

Types of water pollution : 1. Ground water pollution

2.Surface water pollution

3. Lake, River and Sea water pollution.

SOURCES OF WATER POLLUTION:- (A)Natural Sources: 1.Eutrophication process 2.Floods (B)Man made sources: 1. Sewage and domestic wastes 2. Toxic metals 3.Industrial effluents 4.Agricultural discharges 5.Detergents, pesticides

Based on their origin 1.Point sources 2.Nonpoint sources

Causes of water pollution

1. Sewage 2. Nutrient 3.Chemical waste -organic and inorganic 4.Radioactive waste 5.oil pollution 6.plastics 7.Alien species 8.Pathogen -coliform bacteria Burkholderia pseudomallei Cryptosporidium parvum Giardia lamblia Salmonella viruses Parasitic worms (helminths). 9.Thermal pollution

Effect of water pollution:- on ecosystem

on animal health

on human health

Effects on Animal Health-• Large scale death of aquatic and terrestrial animalsReduced reproduction rateIncreased incidence of diseasesImbalances created in secondary food chainsAccumulation of bioaccumulative and non-

biodegradable pollutants in animal bodies. Some organochlorine pesticides (like DDT, BHC,

Endrin) are known for bioaccumulative and biomagnifiable characters.

Bio magnificationDue to bioaccumulative characters, these

pollutants pass through the food chain and food web. While passing through the organisms, the concentration of pollutants gets increased. This is called bio magnifications. For e.g., 0.5 ppm DDT in grasses gets magnified to 2ppm in sheep. It may be magnified to 10 ppm in human beings who eat such polluted mutton.

Some organochlorine pesticides cause health hazards like impotence, cancerous tumors beyond a threshold limit of accumulation

Effect of biomagnification

- Health disorders due to presence of toxic chemicals like DDT.

- Hereditary problems due to manipulation of genetic material.

- Danger of extinction of any particular group of animals or birds.

- Contamination of water reservoirs. - Effect on specific food chains in nature.

Effects on acidrain animals and birds. All living organisms are interdependent on each

other. If a lower life form is killed, other species that depended on it will also be affected. Every animal up the food chain will be affected. Animals and birds, like waterfowl or beavers, which depended on the water for food sources or as a habitat, also begin to die. Due to the effects of acid rain, animals which depended on plants for their food also begin to suffer. Tree dwelling birds and animals also begin languish due to loss of habitat.

CONCLUSION:-

Water is life if it is pure and wholesome but it becomes detrimental to life if it get polluted.

Human activity is mainly responsible for water pollution

Water pollution leads to disturb normal health of the animal and ultimately decreases the production .
