Why donors fund scholarships?• Donor motivation, usually emotional
• Genuine desire to make a difference
• To remember friend, colleague or family member/s
• To encourage research in an area they are passionate about -- illness/area of research has had a personal effect on their lives, or lives of loved ones
How many awards are available?• Variable by year – need to check UNSW
Scholarships website -- Usually up to 12
• Currently 7 individual donor funded ILP awards – though there are 4 Parkinson’s making 9 in total (may be dropped 2014/15)
• There are 5 donor funded honours awards and scholarships – though 2 -3 ILP awards are usually for either ILP or Honours
How do I qualify and what are my obligations?• Apply through UNSW Scholarships website -- usually
open around June and close Nov
• Some ILP awards were reopened 1st Semester 2014 due to NO applicants in 2013
• Complete applications …. not onerous for the reward!
• Thank you letter!!
• Must follow specific reporting obligations – e.g. Parkinson’s ILP
How much money can I get?• Awards range from $2,000 - $6000
• Value may vary annually
• e.g. Hazel Morris Award increased from $1,000 to $2,000 in 2014
How do I apply?
• Apply through UNSW Scholarships website
• Usually open around June and close Nov

• Complete on-line applications …. not onerous for the reward!

Area of research and award value
• Indigenous health, value $2,500
• Cancer research at Coffs Harbour Rural Clinical School, value $2,500
• ILP or Honours in Paediatrics, value $2,000
• Perinatal research, plus travel costs to present research, value $6,000
• the mechanisms of why brain tumours, (oligodendrogliomas), progress from low grade to deadly high grade brain tumours, value $2,500
• honours thesis project OR an ILP relevant to child safety issues, value $4,800
• Parkinson’s research at a Rural Clinical School, value $3,000 (4 scholarships available) ??

Area of research and award value
• Developmental biology, genetics or biochemistry, and their relationship to birth defects, value $1,400
• Any area, value $2,000 (increased for 2014)/15
• Any area, value $4,000
• Diseases of ageing with the aim of improving the quality of life of the aged, value $2,500
• To undertake study or attend a conference related to your Honours work at an overseas university, value $1,400

• Free $ to help you be the best you can be!
• Many have NO applicants at all … no competition, you may as well be the recipient
• Donor funded scholarships, therefore availability and value may change for 2014/15
• Other awards and scholarships which are not donor funded may also be available
• Check UNSW Scholarships website between July – Nov 2014 & S1 2015
