Senate Bill 637

Senate Bill 637 requires adoption of Integrated Pest Management plan in your district.

Specifies certain requirements for integrated pest management plans.

Authorizes governing bodies to adopt, improve or continue any integrated pest management plan that provides protection against pesticide exposure equal to or greater than protections required by act.

Makes public pesticide applicator license requirements applicable to pesticide applications at school campuses

Requirements of IPM

Documentation

Monitoring for Pests

Evaluates the need for pest control by identifying acceptable pest population levels.

Sanitation

Structural remediation

Habitat manipulations

Biological and chemical pest control measures

IPM does not mean you cannot apply a product to control pest populations.

Excludes making routine applications for purely preventive measures.

Excludes applications for aesthetic purposes.

Allows the use of “Low-Risk” products.

What is IPM?(Integrated Pest Management)

IPM is a four level, decision making process.

Use these questions to solve the pest problem:

1. Can I stop the pest from getting in? (Exclusion/Access denial)

2. Can I change the environment to make it less inviting to the pest? (Habitat and harborage modification)

3. Can I stop the pest with a trap? (Physical and Mechanical trapping)

4. Can I control the pest with a product? (Limited product application)

S

Exclusion & Access Denial

What should I fix?

Repair ceiling tilesPests can drop down through ceiling tiles once inside the structure.

“Hello students,” says Rocky the squirrel.

Repair or seal gaps around plumbingMice love to hide in wall voids.

Just think of how many babies they will have!

Install door sweeps

Insects and rodents can gain access under doors.

They don’t ring the door bell.

Caulk windows and doorsInsects such as ants can gain access through missing or deteriorating caulking.

Repair holes in walls

Rodents and insects can enter your buildings through holes.

Repair holes in walls

Rodents and insects can hide in wall voids.

Maintenance is key to avoiding pest issues.

Seal around gutters and downspoutsBirds and rodents can gain access though gaps around downspouts.

Squirrels love to chew into buildings.

S

Habitat & Harborage Modification

What should I change?

Remove soil from bottom lip of siding

Water damage may appear from soil touching wood siding.

This is an invitation to unwanted guests.

Remove ivy from foundationRodents will hide in ivy…just waiting to enter your school.

Move garbage can further away from building

Rodents can feed from garbage cans, but talk about a fly condition waiting to happen!

Trim trees and shrubs

Ants will travel along tree limbs to gain access to the building.

They love bridges!

Remove garbage and clutterGreat place to play hide and seek….just like rodents and ants do!

Keep food in sealed containers

Yum… easy feeding for rodents and ants! Humans too.

Remove bird feeders

You are feeding both birds and rodents.

S

Physical & Mechanical Controls

What’s that mean?

Snap traps for rodentsYou didn’t think I would show you a real mouse did you?

Glue boardsGreat for rodents and insects.

Interior rodent trapUsed in various places to control rodents

Squirrel trapCan catch other animals such as kitty cats.

Requires trap checks every 24 hours

S

Limited Product UseLow-Risk products

What not to use.Illegal substances.

Do you remember this?
