How to answer the interview question everyone dreads
‘Can you tell us a little about yourself?’
No idea how to answer or where to start? We’ve got some tips for you…
It’s in the way you answer.
This question is often used as an ice-breaker, but the way you answer tells the interviewer a lot about you. Make sure you speak clearly, make eye contact and remember - you know this stuff – it’s all about you.
It’s about what you say. Stick to business-related topics but don’t just give them a rundown of your CV – they already have it. Use this time to highlight your key achievements.
It’s about the way you breathe.Relax! You should be proud of what you’ve achieved and talking about yourself should be the easy part of the interview.
It’s about confidence.Confidence is key but don’t overdo it and come across as arrogant. You want to show your strengths but remember we all have our weaknesses too and that’s okay.
It’s about getting to the point.. Now is not the time to go into a long story filled with examples, you’ll have time for that throughout the interview. Keep your answers brief but friendly. You don’t want to appear shy.
It’s about staying focussed.Keep your focus on business topics; you want your answers to demonstrate what you can bring to the role. If the interviewer wants to know more they will ask.
One last thought…Don’t overthink it. Smile, breathe and let your great personality do the rest.
