National Officer Team State Officers

Morrill land grant act of 1862

• Provided land to states to establish colleges for the common man.

• Provide education in agriculture, engineering, and military training.

Hatch Act of 1887

• Provided $15,000 to each state for the development of ag experiment stations.

• Purpose was to conduct research and provide scientific basis for information taught in colleges.

Morrill Act of 1890

Provided funding for Ag and Mechanical colleges for African-Americans.

Smith-Lever Act of 1914

• Established the cooperative extension service.

• Purpose was to help local communities in agriculture and home economics.

Smith-Hughes Act of 1917

• Established vocational education courses in high schools.

• Ag programs were intended to “teach boys about farming.”

1926

Henry Groseclose established the Future

Farmers of Virginia for boys taking ag classes.

1928

33 students from 18 states established the

Future Farmers of America in Kansas City.

1929

National blue and corn gold adopted as official colors.

1933

Official delegates vote to adopt the jacket as the

official dress.

1935

New Farmers of America an organization for African-

American boys is formed inVirginia.

1950

U.S. Congress passes Public Law 81-740 passed. This granted the FFA a federal

charter and declares the ag teacher must also be the FFA

advisor.

1963Vocational Education Act of

1963• Expanded the scope of ag

programs to include off farm enterprises

• Expanded SAE’s.• Funding increased.

1965

New Farmers of America merges with

the FFA adding 50,000 members.

1969

Women are allowed membership at the national

level. Today 35% of FFA membership is female.

1988Understanding Agriculture: New

Directions for Education• FFA changes name to “National FFA

Organization.”• Middle school students allowed to be

FFA members.

2000Reinventing Ag Education:

Vision 2020• 4 major goals: Increase supply of qualified

teachers All students have access to Ag

Ed programs All students agriculturally

literate Partnerships and alliances
