Safety continues to be a top
priority for students and staff at
Avon Community Schools
(ACSC). Recently ACSC
administrators were all trained in
the ALICE program. The ALICE
(Alert—Lockdown—Inform—
Counter—Evacuate) Training
Institute created new best
practices to be used during an
active shooter incident. While this
type of incident is rare, it has
happened in school environments.
These new practices do not
change the district’s current
lockdown procedure, but will
enhance it. Standard practice has
been for the students, teachers,
and administrators to lock down
and shelter. ALICE teaches
strategies to survive life
threatening events. It is the first
training program in the country
that uses critical thinking and
provides response options when a
shooter gains entry into a
classroom. Avon Community
Schools has a plan in place to train
all students and staff over the
course of the school year.
How to Respond to an Active
Shooter Event
In the horrible event that an active
shooter makes his or her way into
a school, hospital, church, or
business, there are steps that can
be taken as an effort to survive an
attack. With workplace violence
as a rising trend across the United
States, the ALICE method is not
limited to preventing a school
shooting. The ALICE Training
Program provides examples for
real, effective ways to thwart an
active shooter. The breakdown to
the right shows methods of how
to respond when a violent intruder
attacks. ALICE strategies are not
chronological in order, but
provide options for individuals to
utilize in attempts to survive an
emergency situation.
ALERT. Use Plain and Specific Language. Avoid Code Words.
LOCKDOWN. Barricade the Room. Silence Mobile Devices. Prepare to EVACUATE or
COUNTER if Needed.
INFORM. Communicate the Shooter’s Location in Real Time.
COUNTER. Create Noise, Movement, Distance and Distraction with the Intent of Reducing the Shooter’s Ability to Shoot
Accurately.
Evacuate. When Safe to Do so, Remove Yourself from the Danger Zone.
AVON COMMUNITY SCHOOLS Enhanced Safety Practices Being Implemented in Avon
SAFETY TRAINING Students and staff in all Avon Community Schools are trained
each year in best practices for school safety. Each semester staff and students practice fire, tornado, and man-
made drills. All doors at each building are either locked or manned by a
school employee. All visitors to the district must check in and show identification to be admitted to the building.
To enhance the safety of a lockdown, students and staff will now be trained in ALICE skills each year.

HONOR AN EDUCATOR
Give a gift that keeps on giving!
As the holiday season approaches, this is the perfect time to show your appreciation to an Avon educator. If there is a special teacher, bus driver, staff member, secretary, aide, custodian or administrator who has made a difference in your
child’s life, you may want to consider honoring that person by making a tax-deductible donation in his/her name to the Avon Education Foundation. We’ve asked our staff and they agree that a personal “thank you” or acknowledgement is the best gift of all and a do-nation made in their name is even more special. When a donation of $10 or more is made to the Honor-An-Educator Fund, a unique gift and special holiday card will be delivered to your honoree. At your discretion, the card will include your child’s name and any special sentiment you or your child care to include. All proceeds from the Honor-an-Educator fund directly benefit children through classroom grants and funding for edu-cational programs in all buildings, classroom projects, field trips, supplies, etc.
Please consider honoring that special person who has made a difference in your child’s life!
Donations should be received by the Foundation no later than Wednesday, December 10.
Your donation of $10.00 or more should be made payable to:
Avon Education Foundation
7203 East U.S. Highway 36
Avon, IN 46123
If you choose to send your donation to your child’s school office, be sure to put it in a sealed envelope marked Avon Education Foundation - Confidential.

It was reported in last
week’s issue of the
Hickory Highlights that
our 4th grade students
earned over $1,600.00 for the Project Angel
Food Drive. This was incorrect. The actual
amount of money earned by these hardworking
students was $2,019.00! Kroger also donated an
additional $170.00 This is more than double the
amount earned last year.
Some of the types of chores that students did
were raking leaves, sweeping the garage, doing
laundry, washing dishes, dusting or vacuuming
the house, and taking care of pets. The purpose
of the project was to encourage the students to
do something that would help the Avon
community and to incorporate real world
mathematical ideas at the same time.
Thank you to our 4th graders for their warm
and caring hearts!
