REMOVE MORE METAL. MAKE MORE PARTS. MAXIMIZE YOUR BUSINESS.
HIGH FEED MILLING

THREE TIMES FASTER MILLING UNLOCKS GOLDEN OPPORTUNITIES
Times change. Increasingly effi cient competition demands increas-ingly effi cient machining methods. High Feed Milling is the key to keeping your company in front. It’s a milling method that permits up to three times faster machining than conventional methods. Instead of cutting with greater depth — and shortening tool life — it does the opposite. It pairs shallow depth of cut with high feed per tooth, sparing the tools. Which gives higher metal removal rate than normal. It’s a method with generous advantages. For example, the cutting forces are directed at the machine spindle in the axial direction. Reducing vibrations and in turn extending tool life. Leading to a better return on investment. But that’s not all! Machining with a small cutting depth and fast feed per tooth you can remove over 1,000 cubic centimetres per minute. As a matter of fact, sometimes you can increase feed rates up to ten times the normal rate. And even though it s a roughing method, near net shapes are achievable. Which allows you to skip semi-fi nishing and go directly to the fi nal fi nishing operation. Which gives you the freedom to produce more components per machine. Giving you a better foothold for competing with other companies. High Feed Milling opens doors to more lucrative business.
4
If you’re already in the market for High Feed Milling, you’ll be even more convinced by the next few pages. Let’s begin at the point where metal meets metal: with the inserts. They’re thick and have a big radius and strong geometry at the cutting zone. This means you can work at high speed and still have reliable and safe machining. On the other hand, the cutting depth is small – maximum 2.0 mm. But because of this, you can increase cutting speed considerably. Reducing the machining time for every component. As a natural outcome, production effectiveness jumps!
FEWER VIBRATIONS, MORE STABLE CUTTINGThe HFM method takes advantage of small setting angles. This gives minimal radial- and maximal axial cutting forces. Which reduces the risk for vibrations and stabilises machining. In turn, this allows raised parameters for
cutting even when machining with a large overhang. Gains from High Feed Milling are more than just higher productivity. Tool life is prolonged. This cuts tool costs. The comprehensive HFM programme suits all kinds of applications. Which gives you great fl exibility. Many of the cutter bodies are coated with hardy nickel chrome alloy prolonging both body and insert life. High Feed Milling has a lot going for it. And there’s more.

HIGH FEED CUTTERS3 TIMES AS FAST WHEN USING LONG OVERHANG
• Cutting edges designed with very big radii• Small depth of cut but high feed rates without vibration• Cutting forces always in axial direction
LONG OVERHANG, FASTER MACHINING, SAFER CHOICE OF INSERTSHigh Feed Milling and long overhang co-operate in perfect harmony. Using long overhang with high feed cutters, you can machine three times faster. This implies that your choice is trigon style inserts and cutting edges designed with very big radii. So the small depth of cut and high feed rates without vibration come naturally. And so do the cutting forces, always in an axial direction. Actually, for most High Feed Milling operations trigon style inserts are preferred over round. The reason is that the main cutting forces are located at the bottom of the cutting edge. Of course, there are situations when you use square inserts – in such cases with a small setting angle. And mostly in High Feed heavy roughing applications using powerful machines in stable conditions or in horizontal milling operations, making chip evacuation more effective. But in vertical operations trigon style inserts are a safe choice, offering excellent chip evacuation. Also when it comes to smaller machines with high rpm.
6
ROUGHING...SEMI-FINISHING...FINISHING. Not only is machining time shortened for every piece, but the minimal radial forces also reduce wear on the spindle at the same time as cutting forces are absorbed by the tool — qualities that cut downtime because of reduced main-tenance needs. Another HFM time-saver is the number of operations. Since high feed roughing with its small depths of cut
generates a shape close to the fi nal requested form, semi-fi nishing operations can often be eliminated. The NC programming is thus simplifi ed. On top of this, the HFM process doesn’t demand increased rotational speed from the machine.
7
GREATER RELIABILITY, BETTER UTILISATION, SMALLER TOOL INVENTORIES.With insert grades that can machine diffi cult materials, the predictability of the tools also increases. The result: fewer tool changes, less rejects, less reworking. In addition, every insert has a robust geometry. A quality that delivers two things: longer machining time before you have to index the insert and a more
comprehensive application area for every tool. In other words, you’re making better use of your tools. This reduces the tool inven-tory and consequently, costs. Its stable geometry also saves time. Fewer tool changes, fewer settings and less machine downtime. The time gained means maximal machining time on every machine, higher output and greater fl exibility with applications. Speaking of applications, there’s a broad range of holder lengths and insert diameters, with the huge advantage of making optimal use of your tools in every application.
8
HIGH FEED SOLUTIONS FOR ALL YOUR APPLICATIONS
FACE MILLING SOLUTIONSFace milling with the HFM method is perfect for creating a good platform for further machining operations or a fi nal fi nishing. In most HFM applications, you’ll often get such fi ne tolerances that only fi nal fi nishing is needed. Since the work involves large blocks, tools with large diameters are most often used. That is, trigon style inserts in cutters with cassette bodies. High Feed face milling is relevant for most soft materials like aluminium, iron and steel. However, the method is rarely used for hard alloys or other diffi cult-to-machine materials. The trick is to choose the right insert grade and geometry for each material, while the choice of cutter body is more obvious. The fi rst choice for face milling should be the cassette version of the R220.21-C with 218.19-160 inserts (Ø88 mm – 208 mm).
COPY MILLING SOLUTIONS Copy milling using the HFM method is also very practical for machining uneven surfaces. At the end of this brochure are recommendations for tool choices and other parameters – all depending on what is to be machined, the size of the component to be produced and the level of rigidity. Here, the choice is between Jabro Solid End Mill, Minimaster and R217/220.21 with 218.19 or SCET120630T inserts. CAVITY MILLING SOLUTIONSThe HFM method is highly effective in cavity milling and especially effective in mould and die. Just as in copy milling, the application indicates the necessary tool diameter. So the choice of tool becomes almost evident, although certain variables apply. Here, too, choice is based on the size of the workpiece and the need for rigidity. The choice is between Jabro Solid End Mill, Minimaster and R217/220.21 with 218.19 or SCET120630T inserts.

HELICAL INTERPOLATION SOLUTIONSIn helical interpolation, the HFM method is a very suitable solution for making large-diameter holes — you can skip pre-machining or pre-drilling. The high feed cutter has minimal contact with the component’s wall section. The advantage is more stable machining than with conventional milling cutters that have a 90-degree setting angle.
MILLING WITH PCBNCBN200 is an exceptional milling grade. Its unique combination of toughness, wear resistance, edge quality, fi ne grain size and unique metal binder translates into a grade which can perform both roughing and fi nishing of hardened steel / irons, powdered / sintered irons and grey cast irons.
Use the same cutting parameters as those used for ramping and • helical interpolation operations.Higher cutting speeds compared to carbide inserts• The best result is obtained with conventional milling, whereas • with carbide cutters and inserts we recommend climb milling as the fi rst choice.Do not use coolant during milling operations.•
PLUNGING SOLUTIONSHFM tools are also excellent for plunging operations. They’re especially appropriate for diffi cult materials like titanium and other light alloys. High Feed Milling is equally suitable for applications with long over-hangs. The risk for vibrations drops. Which extends tool life, but notice that square inserts should be avoided for overhangs larger than 3 x D. Normal feed rates are used together with larger cutting depths. Suitable tools are Jabro Solid End Mill, Minimaster and R217/220.21 with 218.19 or SCET120630T inserts.
