The rhythmic support in the orquesta típica5 is provided through
the use of articulations in the rhythmic melody and in the
rhythmic-harmonic base, and its percussive manner of execution.
In rhythmic melody the combination of articulations
generates a variety of variations that can be coordinated or
contrasted with the rhythmic-harmonic base.
The main articulations used in the genre are the short and
long accents and the staccatis.
The rhythmic support of the orchestra is provided by the models
of the rhythmic-harmonic base, which in tango are:
Marcati: in 4, in 2 (also called marcato in 1 and 3), in 2 inverted,
yumba6.
Syncopations: anticipated, a tierra7 (down-beat), successive.
Other rhythms: pesante in 4, pesante in 2, half notes and chorale,
bordoneos (bass string riffs),8 3-3-2, umpa-umpa,9 polyrhythms.
Síncopas: anticipada, a tierra7, sucesivas.
TEMPO
The stability of the tempo in tango varies according to the style:
there are orchestras that keep the rhythm extremely steady
and others that are extremely exible in their handling of it.
It is important to mention at this point the absence of percussion
instruments in the orquesta típica (typical orchestra),10 the
result of arrastrado (dragged)11 time-keeping, which necessitates
a exible, non-mechanical type of percussive action.

We call the act of “saying” the melody by expressively
modifying its rhythm fraseo. It is important to remember that a
singable melody should not usually be played with the rhythm
that is written: the rhythmic values on the page should be taken
as guidelines.
In tango, the world of expression is inhabited by expressive
melodies, the fundamental expressive tool being the use
of fraseo.
12 A detailed list of the use of these tools is given in “Ensemble” on,
p. 150.
12
TEXTURAS
TEXTURES
The most common textures in tango are:
Solo: a particular instrument expressing the melody.
Soli: several instruments playing a melody
homorhythmically (e.g. the strings and/or the bandoneons).
Tutti: the entire orchestra playing the same idea
homorhythmically.
For each texture there are specic rules for using the tools of
the genre.12
RHYTHM AND EXPRESSION IN PARALLEL
When an instrument phrases a melody expressively, the
orchestra or accompaniment group must “hold” the rhythmic
progress stable without being affected by the soloist’s
rhythmic-melodic modications.

The possibilities of the use of fraseo range from fraseo básico
(basic phrasing) (which is handled between the downbeats of
the bar) and fraseo extendido (extended phrasing) (which takes
rhythmic licence beyond those limits) to the use of rubato
(which actually erases the bar-line when performed by the
whole orchestra; e.g. The Pugliese Orchestra). The various
different types of fraseo can be performed closed or open.
