Nuclear waste site – To meet the mounting requirements at a nuclear waste site, 150-pound weld flanges (per ANSI B16.5) were integrated into the frame of this isolation damper. In addition, two opposed blades were used to prevent the blade from extending beyond the edge of the frame when the damper was opened.
Dust collection system – At 110 inches (2794 mm) diameter, this damper was built for a massive industrial dust collection system. Greenheck engineered the blade to withstand static pressure differences over 20 in. wg (5 kPa) when closed. A single actuator was used to drive the damper, providing over 11,000 in. lbs. (1243 N•m) of torque.
Scrubber system – Greenheck developed this damper to resist hazardous particles inside of an air scrubber. To give the product the proper corrosion resistance, both the inside and outside of each type 316 stainless steel airfoil blade were coated with Teflon S. Frame, axles, linkage, and all hardware were also made of type 316 stainless steel, while o-ring axle seals were used to prevent leakage out of the duct and into the atmosphere.
Wind tunnel – This 62-inch (1575 mm) diameter damper was built with two blades in order to control air more accurately in a test chamber. Greenheck met the customer’s requirements by providing and installing the specified pneumatic actuator, 4-20 mA positioner, and limit switch package on the damper. As with all heavy-duty dampers, this unit was cycle tested open/closed and all components tested before leaving our factory.
Furnace exhaust – Greenheck took on this challenge by developing a special high temperature damper, capable of continuous operation of 1500°F (816°C). The special high temperature blade was designed to minimize warping through effi cient heat transfer across its profi le. To meet the leakage requirements, Greenheck used a ceramic blade and jamb seal to provide tight shut off when closed.

Construction Features and OptionsAt Greenheck, our models are the starting point to building your custom solution. Weoffer a wide range of options to customize our product to suit your needs. Many of theseoptions Greenheck offers are listed below, however, if your request is not shown, please consult the factory.
Frame – The construction of each Greenheck industrial damper begins with a heavy-duty, flanged channel frame. Standard frame depths are 8 or 10 inches (203 or 254 mm), enough room to keep the blade linkage inside the frame depth and outside of the airstream. Flanges can be punched to meet any mounting-hole configuration, and are available in widths of 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 inches (38, 51, and 64mm). Each frame is available in a variety of materials, including galvanized steel, carbon steel, galvanneal steel, 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel, and aluminum. Material thickness can range from 14 ga. (1.9mm) to 3/8 inch (9.5mm), depending on air velocity, static pressure, damper size, and any other variables unique to the application.
For maximum corrosion resistance, Greenheck offers a wide variety of professionally applied finishes: Hi-Pro Polyester, Epoxy, Industrial Epoxy, Permatector, High-Temperature Aluminum, and Teflon S.
Blades – Several blade options are available to meet different pressure drop and strength requirements in each damper series. Most blades are offered in the same material, thickness, and coatings found on Greenheck damper frames.
• Rectangular Series (HCD) – The standard blade for a HCD damper is the 3-V type, fabricated with three longitudinal “V’s” for structural support. For better pressure drop performance at elevated velocities, specify the fabricated or extruded aluminum airfoil blades available on Greenheck heavy-duty dampers.
• Round Series (HCDR) – Each round damper uses a single butterfly blade in the airstream. On larger damper diameters, blades are reinforced to provide the necessary strength to support the blade when in the closed position. Greenheck can also build round industrial dampers with two opposed blades for greater control when modulating the damper or to keep the blade from extending beyond the frame.
• Backdraft and Pressure Relief (HB and HPR) – All of Greenheck’s heavy-duty backdraft and pressure relief dampers use an edge-pivoting blade. Standard construction is the fabricated 2-V blade, which is strengthened by two longitudinal "V"s, designed for a tight seal when closed and low pressure drop when open. To complete Greenheck’s model line, a fabricated or extruded aluminum airfoil blade is available for better performance at higher velocities and pressures.
Continuous Operating Temperature Limits Greenheck's frame and blade materials can meet many applications, but each has maximum operating temperature limits. The chart to the right displays these limits (for higher temperatures, consult Greenheck).

Actuators
Since each application is unique, Greenheck offers a wide selection of actuators for use with our heavy-duty dampers. Not only can we assist with specifying the right actuator for your project, we will design and fabricate the custom hardware to mount the actuator to the damper. When specifying an actuator, please take into consideration the following three items:
Type - Three types available are electric, pneumatic, or manual operation. Below are common options available for each type of actuator:• Electric- 24, 115, and 230 VAC at 50 or 60 Hz• Pneumatic - 20, 40, 60, or 80 psi (138, 276, 414, or 552 kPa)• Manual - Manual quadrant or worm gear with handwheel or chain wheel
Function - Choose between two-position, floating, or modulating service. • Two position actuators open or close the damper• Floating actuators allow the damper blades to be positioned anywhere between open and close. • Modulating actuators require a supply power and a control signal to move the damper to the desired position
between open and closed. Please specify a control signal, such as: 2-10 Vdc, 4-20 mAdc, 0-135 ohms, or3-15 psi (21-103 kPa).
Operation - The two common types of actuator operation are spring return and power-open/power-closed (also known as double-acting). • Spring Return actuators require power (or air) to move in one direction, while the internal spring will return the
actuator to its initial position. Spring return actuators are common on installations requiring a fail-safe design.• Power Open/Power Close actuators require power to move in both directions. Double-acting actuators are
similar to power-open/power-closed but, refer specifically to pneumatic actuators. Double-acting actuators require an air supply to turn the actuator in either direction.

Many accessories are available in addition to each actuator selection. Below areseveral common options we can provide to customize your solution:
• Actuator housings - Actuators are often subjected to hazardous environments during their operating life. We offer many electric models with housings designed for water-tight and dust-tight (NEMA 4), corrosion resistant (NEMA 4X), hazardous location (NEMA 7 & 9), and short-term high temperature (250ºC for 1 or 2 hours) environments.
• Limit switches - Limit switches are available on many actuators, but can be installed separately to provide positive blade indication. Many limit switch packages are
offered with NEMA 4, 4X, 7, or 9 housings for hazardous environments.
• Manual override - In case of a loss of power or air pressure, actuators can be fitted with a manual override. In an emergency, the override will allow the damper to be opened or closed through the use of a handwheel or manual quadrant.
• Heater & Thermostat - A heater and thermostat can be used to regulate the actuator temperature and can prevent condensation from forming on electrical components.
• Pneumatic Accessories - Several options are available from Greenheck to control pneumatic actuators. For two position operation, a solenoid valve (3-way or 4-way, depending on actuator operation) can be mounted directly to the actuator in various voltages. Modulating pneumatic actuators use a positioner with a 3-15 psi control signal to control blade position. A pneumatic positioner can also be fitted with an I/P converter, allowing a 2-10 Vdc or 4-20mAdc control signal input.
• Transformers - Although most actuators are available in an array of voltages, those not found can be supplied through the use of a transformer. Transformers can often be supplied with housings that can match the housing of the actuator specified.

HCD Series Greenheck’s HCD product line is one of the most comprehensive groups of industrial control dampers in the industry. Capable of 45 in. wg (11200 Pa), 6000 fpm (30.5 m/s), and 1500° F* (815°C), Greenheck’s HCD dampers can solve industries most difficult challenges. Each HCD damper comes standard with an extended shaft; optional is a manual quadrant or a multitude of actuators available to meet the toughest requirements of today’s industrial environments.
HCDR SeriesTo complement Greenheck’s rectangular heavy-duty control dampers, the HCDR model line offers an extensive range of round dampers for industrial use. Solid flanges are formed around the circular frame, providing a rigid base to support the butterfly style blade. For larger diameters, blades are reinforced with structural supports to ensure years of operation at elevated pressures and velocities. Each HCDR is available with EPDM, fiberglass tadpole, and silicone blade seals to reduce leakage through the damper. Greenheck’s HCDR-351 is specially designed for isolation use, with EPDM tadpole seals providing ultra-low leakage performance.

HPR SeriesSimilar in construction to Greenheck’s HB series, HPR dampers are built for relieving pressure in industrial systems. Two adjustable counterbalance weights are positioned on the blade axles at 90° angles, allowing for precise control of the damper’s opening pressure in the field. Several blade profiles are available to meet greater opening pressures and pressure drop characteristics.
HPR-120
HB SeriesGreenheck’s HB series consist of several models that will meet almost any industrial backdraft application. Each damper is designed to prevent backflow at static pressures up to 20 in. wg (4981 Pa). Adjustable counterbalance weights are mounted externally for easy adjustment and balancing in the field. To meet Spark A requirements, specify Greenheck’s HB-240 with all-aluminum blades, axles, and frames.

HSD SeriesFor applications where UL555S leakage is required, look to Greenheck's HSD-401 damper for an industrial solution. Each damper is constructed with the same flange mount frame as the HCD series, allowing for easy mounting to a fan outlet. Blades are extruded aluminum, and the damper is driven by a UL555S qualified actuator.
• UL 555S Class I leakage • Pressure rated for up to 6 in. wg (1494 Pa) • Velocity rated for up to 3000 fpm (15.2 m/s) • Available in sizes up to 96 in. x 60 in. (2438mm x 1524mm) or 48 in. x 120 in. (1219mm x 3048mm)
Industrial Fan Inlet/Outlet DampersThe Industrial control damper mounted on a centrifugal fan (shown at right) is designed to control airflow and provide shut off on inlet or outlet of industrial fans in HVAC or industrial control systems. On this particular fan, the damper was mounted perpendicular to fan shaft to better distribute the high velocity at fan scroll perimeter.
Industrial backdraft dampers are used on blower outlets for automatic isolation. They allow air to pass in one direction and restrict flow in the opposite direction. Each damper is factory adjusted for its intended flow direction. Multiple nested counterbalance arms and weights are adjusted to reduce load on bearings and linkage. Industrial backdraft dampers are recommended for low temperatures and clean air applications.
The Inlet Vane Damper (shown at right) is typically mounted to the inlet flange of an industrial fan to control the amount of airflow entering the fan. The parallel blade action of an Inlet Vane Damper directs the airflow into the fan to modify the fan performance. External Inlet Vane Dampers are used for ducted applications and those with higher pressure and velocities. Nested Inlet Vane dampers are built into the centrifugal fan inlet cone. Inlet Box Dampers are used to isolate fans and to pre-swirl incoming flow. These dampers are very commonly used in coal fired power plants with dirty flue gas.
Fan Isolation ApplicationThe Isolation damper is used with a manual quadrant or electric actuator to control direction, limit and/or isolate the airfl ow as desired. If leakage rated dampers are mounted downstream of air handling equipment, they are typically designed with blades running horizontally.

Tunnel Ventilation DampersRoad and underground metro tunnels are some of the most diffi cult environmentsin the world. High humidity, dust-laden air, and limited access can make the installation and operation of ventilation systems problematic. However, these issues become insignifi cant in the event of an emergency—the dampers and fans that make up the ventilation system simply must operate when lives are on the line. Greenheck’s tunnel specifi c dampers, the HTD series, were designed to meet these challenges.
Construction—Greenheck’s HTD series dampers begin with the same fl ange mount, channel style frame as the HCD line of products. Two blade profi les are offered: the HTD-630 is designed with a fabricated airfoil blade, and the HTD-640 uses an extruded aluminum blade. Several materials can be used to meet the requirements of each environment, including galvanized steel, 304 or 316 stainless steel, or aluminum.
Reliability—In compliance with NFPA 130 and 502, HTD models are tested in Greenheck’s test facility for operation up to two hours at 482°F (250°C). Our engineering staff has the experience to perform any additional tests as required including the cyclic pressure test, mimicking the piston effect caused by passing trains.
Maintainability—HTD dampers are designed to keep maintenance procedures simple and to a low frequency. The bearings on an HTD damper are bronze sleeve type, requiring no lubrication or maintenance throughout its useful life. Linkages are designed for L/360 defl ection, and are keyed on each axle to allow for easy removal. In addition, each axle is bolted to the damper blade, allowing for easy removal if repair is needed.
