Behaviour• The school plays a major role in the

formation of responsible and respectful citizens. As such, a high standard of behaviour is expected from our pupils. The school promotes positive behaviour by means of rewards systems which have been established and operate throughout the school.

Healthy EatingThe school canteen is committed

to the provision of the ethos of a health promoting school. Menu options are varied and interesting offering a range of exciting and innovative choices which are enjoyed by the pupils. As part of the healthy eating plan the range of available soft drinks concentrates on low sugar alternatives including water.

Homework

Homework is any form of learning which originates in the classroom but takes place or continues elsewhere.

A pupil’s education is always a partnership between home and school, and, for homework to be effective, a strong mutual commitment between partners is necessary.

Uniform Policy• We intend to make important changes to our uniform next

session.  We have been consulting with pupils and they have been very positive about the proposed changes.  From August 2009 our dress code will be:

• Black footwear with separate trainers for PE• For S5 – S6 (with the exception of those attending the pre-

vocational Christmas leavers course) white shirt/blouse with school tie and blazer (see below).

• Pupils in S1 – S4 are free to wear our existing uniform options (white shirt/blouse, sweat top or polo shirt) for one more session, but I would encourage parents and carers to consider buying the shirt/blouse and blazer.

• Plain dark jacket or coat• Black skirts or trousers• For girls there is the option of a tartan skirt.• From August 2010 sweat shirts and polo tops will be

discontinued.

Our School

The history of Hamilton began on August 24, 1864, when the vessel Rangiriri landed a group of settlers at Kirikiriroa. The smallest of three large Maori villages in the area, Kirikiriroa was first settled by the Ngatiwairere, a sub-tribe of the Tainui, around 1700, on the western side of the river. Today, a plaque on the front wall of the Public Trust Office, in Victoria Street, marks the northern boundary of the original pa site.

At the time of settlement, two other Maori villages shared the area, one being Te Rapa Pa, the other, on the east side of the river, Miropiko Pa, named after a crooked Miro tree growing on a nearby hilltop.

Hamilton, proclaimed a borough in 1877, was named after Captain John Charles Fane Hamilton, who met his death in the battle of Gate Pa. First mayor of the fledging city was Isaac R. Vialou, an architect of some renown with several other business interests in the area. He held office till February 1878.
