GLOBAL HALAL INDUSTRY

• The global halal market is currently estimated at US$2.3 trillion covering both food and non-food sectors.

HALAL DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (HDC)

• Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC) is a developmental body that is unique in its own right. The Malaysian government established HDC in September 2006 because it realised the potential of the halal business.

• It also understood the country’s unique position and strengths would enable HDC to spearhead the overall development of the halal industry. Malaysia: Halal export

• Total exports for the halal industry has touched the RM10bil mark, recording a 17.8% growth to RM10.8bil in the first quarter of this year, compared with RM9.1bil in the same period a year earlier.

• A significant bulk of it was contributed by the food and beverage products, which stood at RM5.67bil, a 59% increase from RM3.5bil in the previous corresponding period.

• Export was mainly to China, which stood at RM1.17bil, followed by the United States at RM1bil and Singapore RM807.58mil.

• Export comprised of specialty processed food, ingredients, livestock, pharmaceuticals and personal care.

Malaysia as a Global Halal Hub

• Malaysia has always welcomed investments into its halal-related manufacturing sectors. To facilitate this process, HDC was established as one stop agency in the development of the halal Industry.

• By leveraging on its close partnership with major government agencies such as the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and the Malaysia External Trade Development (MATRADE), HDC will work closely with potential investors to position Malaysia as the most attractive place in the region to invest where halal-related manufacturing is concerned.
