What is Habitat for Humanity?• Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, Christian ministry founded

on the belief that every man, woman, and child should have a safe, stable, and affordable place to live.

What do they do?• Habitat for Humanity builds comfortable and affordable

homes for those in need all around the world.

Birmingham, Alabama, USA Arthiru, Kenya

Houses in North America.• Most U.S. and Canadian Habitat houses share these

characteristics:• Living space of about 1,000 square feet. • One bathroom.• Covered primary entrance.• 3’ doorways and 3’4” to allow wheelchair access.

• Even though they share the same characteristics, the differences in climate and construction techniques insure individuality. Also the homeowners have a say in some customization.

Houses in other parts of the world.• The houses around the world are mostly very different from

one another. They take into consideration the climate, the environment, and what the weather is usually like.

Papua New GuineaDue to heavy rains houses are build up off the ground to keep it dry. The area under the house is used for storage, gatherings, and livestock. Wood is primarily used and treated to block decay and termite infestations.

GuatemalaHouses are made of hollow concrete blocks and steel rods to resist earthquakes. The coverings are wood here, but metal is used in some areas where wood is more expensive.

Why is Habitat needed?• The world is experiencing a global crisis. • In the United States, 48.5 million people are living in poverty.• Decent stable housing provides someone with more than just

a roof over their head.• Housing must become a priority.• The percentage of people without decent housing to live in is

rising.• If we want to succeed in the fight against poverty, we must be for

the expansion of housing.
