A Brief History of Print

Early books

Prior to the invention of the printing press, books were not easy to come by.

Only the very rich could read because they were the only ones that could afford books.

Why?

Books were written out by hand.

Early booksThe handwritten books were very ornate and extremely expensive; consequently, only the rich could afford them.

They were printed on parchment or vellum (prepared animal skins).

Moveable type had been invented by Bi Sheng in the 1040s.

Johannes Gutenberg is credited with revolutionizing the printing industry by combining the ideas of moveable, replaceable type, new methods of making paper, oil-based inks, and a mechanized press.

Books could be mass-produced.

Early booksGutenberg printed many bibles.

Within 10 years, presses were set up all across Europe.

Within 50 years, approximately 35,000 editions were printed (McLain).

Early books - AmericasThe first operable printing press was set up in the New World circa 1533; the first printed book can be traced to missionaries in Mexico.

A printing press was set up in Cambridge, Massachusetts Bay Colony, in 1638 (Walden Print Co.).

One of the first things a new government wants to control is books.

Keep the masses in the dark; keep them uneducated.
