• Greek Art > is the style of artistic expression that flourished in the continental Greece and other parts of the Mediterranean area.
• Unique contributions of Greece in the early history of art are NATURALISM and IDEALISM.
• The highest of the Greek art was to improve on nature.
• Greeks attained greatest achievements in the art of form ------ARCHITECTURE and SCULPTURE.
1. Archaic Period (1000-480 B.C.E)- strived to portray the perfection of human form.
2. Golden Age (480 – 400 B.C.E)- Greek sculptors succeeded in the quest to portray the human form as a symbol of perfect proportion.
Three classical orders
1. Doric Order2. Ionic Order3. Corinthian Order
are the interpretation of the ancient post-and beam structure. The style was made in stone columns enriched with ornaments and moldings.
• The Doric column style features a large square block at the top called the abacus. No base is used for the doric column. . A doric column is massive and short.
• The ionic order has a pair of spirals or large volutes at the top of the column. The base is round with alternating concave and convex features.
• The Corinthian order is the most slender and the tallest of all the columns. The design is associated with luxury and feminine characteristics.
